Dome light in a 1997 Prot LX

This one is a little stranger than my tire question, but one that I can't figure out....I noticed tonight that my dome light has 3 position switches: Off, On & Door, plus 2 round buttons for the actual lights to come on. The problem I have is that when I open my door, the dome light doesn't come on in any position I put it, unless I push one of the little buttons & then it stays on, even with the door closed. Any ideas? Some of you with 97's must have come across this before.

Also, as an aside, I'd like to know if any of you have put a Bulldog alarm/keyless entry into your 97's. I just bought mine today & it looks tough, but I think I can do it, and frankly, it's cheaper than having to spend $100 on a pro installer.....

I'm no expert, but that sounds like there's a loose or broken connection. have you taken it apart to see if any of the metal leads are broken?

I fixed the dome light....When you take the cover off the light, the dome light itself is the center light of the 3. My problem was that the lightbulb itself has two metal connector caps....the one I pulled out had only one, and the filament exposed on the other end. The light now works....and, my neighbor Mike & I are installing the car alarm/keyless entry later today.
