Does transmission/shifter just SUDDENLY break in?

Something really wierd (but great). I changed the tranny fluid about 1000 miles ago, and noticed that it was a little easier (especially in the mornings) but nothing fantastic. Today out of the blue (I mean OUT OF THE BLUE!!!), I made a right turn, and the rest of the ride home, everything just clicked. It was simple to shift between gears. Almost like there was no resistance at all anymore. Just so easy. I parked it and was afraid to take it out again for fear that it was a momentary thing and it'll be stiff again!

Well, I'll see how it feels tomorrow. I'll also be installing a new motor mount tomorrow, but we'll see how it is tomorrow.

Has anyone else had this happen? Just make a turn or start the car one morning and all of a sudden, the light shines down on their car and everything works as you dreamed? Man. It felt GREAT! I just hope it stays like that for a while!

Maybe the turn splashed some oil onto the gears, lol - just a guess. Check your fluid level though. To answer your question, no I haven't had a problem like that with the tranny. Down here it's warmer and the oil heats up pretty quickly so it gets nice and smooth after only a few minutes.

How can I check the fluid level? I have a mazdaspeed 3 and as far as I can tell, the only way to check your fluid level is to drain it and refill it. Not the greatest option. I don't see any dipstick or anything.

^^No there isn't a dipstick but from what I read, you can check the level by opening the fill hole and adding till it starts pouring out. I agree that's not the best option but since you seem to have this issue maybe it's worth the hassle.

I guess that's the course I'll have to take. Last question, can I top off with another brand fluid if i make sure its the same weight? I would imagine so, but I just want to check.

People mix oils all the time. I guess if it's the same (correct) weight, you should be ok. Just to be on the safe side though, you could probably try the dealer to see what it costs.
