Does the brand of lowering springs really matter?

I'm planning on lowering my car on the stock struts. Only thing is, I'm really wondering if the brand on the springs really matter that much? Only concern is maybe spring-rates, but all after market springs have a firmer spring rate anyways.

He is local to me, in fact there is someone who is selling these locally at a vendor for only $60. Is it really worth it to dump $200+ on an eibach or if I get these, what can go wrong?

I'm also wondering, do Protege sedan springs fit into a Protege 5? Ie. some sites just say Protege 02-03 but without explicitely saying "Protege 5".

If the struts have over 80K on them - swap them as well. Labor is not worth doing this again in only 20K miles or less. ;)

We lowered our 5 and said ok we will never race this car, just ride low and slow...lol
That being said, Im not affarid to say that I bought some el-cheap-o ebay springs. Put them on the car with stock struts at about 5,000miles. It drove and performed nice. Now at 70,000miles its time to replace the struts, it rides like a lumber wagon, and combine that with soild motor mounts....its ruff lol.

With a full coilover suspension you will get the most out of your money. Just lowering stock struts willeventually lead to the struts going bad earlier then expected. With coilovers you get full adjustability as well as spring and dampning rates that are tailored to fit with each other. The eibach kit is one of the best springs for the protege. Tein lowering springs give the car a raked look. Not sure about any other brands. If you want to go low now for cheap springs will work. Just don't expect the struts to last very long. what did you base this on?

and yes coilovers are the best suspension upgrades out there but there also the most expensive
most people dont want to go all out and springs are just fine for them, if he wants to go super low then i would suggest coilovers too
but the ride will be stiff and they are, at the cheapest, 1000 dollars
 
my 2 cents..... If ur gon be doin the springs you might as well throw some better struts on too, also I would go with a well known brand name not just some ebay ones labeled "lowering spring" with no mention of a brand at all. But thats just me
 
It really comes down to spring rates. Companys like eibach, H&R, Tein do alot of R&D to match the spring rates with the car wieght and balance. They also use very high quality steel. Those ebay springs may be nothing more then coiled steel with no regards to how they make the car handle. Personally I want the eibach's cuz of progressive spring rates meaning they get firmer the harder you push them but retain a relitivly nice comfy ride when driving normal.
 
Yeah I ran coilovers before on my Jetta. But now that I'm an Mazda owner, coils are much more expensive for some reason. Alright thanks for the info guys.
 
Ran a set of Espelirs with Tokico Blues for around 25K. Nice look, but a stiffer ride than I wanted with Goodyear GS-D3 215/45/17s. Went to a set of MSP springs/Blues/same rollers. Dropped about an inch, handles as well as Espelirs, rides firmer than stock, softer than Espelirs. Very satisified after 100K in this configuration.

No rubbing, no problems. :cool:
 
I just put some MSP shocks on my P5, looks pretty good. sadly I havent been able to drive my car yet but ill let ya know how it turns out. (oh stocks struts and Pireli soft tires)

with the msp springs, you did not have P5 sagginess ?
 
He says he doesn't have a saggy rear which I just don't believe, because the MSP rear struts are significantly taller.

If you actually read my entire post you would see that I said springs will work for now if you want a cheap drop. And I actually only paid $500 for my tein super streets. Much less than the $1000 minimum. You just have to be a good negotiator. I never pay retail for parts.
