Does it still pay to shop around for a car?

Just wondering, should I be visiting Mazda dealers around town/province or are they all hooked together now with regards to pricing? My dad saved a few grand on a car by driving 80Kms, but that was in 1990. What, if anything, varies between same make dealers these days other than customer service?

oh hell yes it does, and in Canada where the used car market is so expensive. (at least in Toronto), you might save big.
Are you going for a used or New?

Oh, we're buying new, that's the reason I asked. I used to live in a town that had about a 4 mile main street with like 20 something used car dealers on or within sight of it. Come to think of it I haven't seen any 3s or recent Mazda products on lots..

So since we're buying a new car will it be a good idea to shop? Mazda.ca just breaks the prices down by province, not dealer and I figured they'd all be networked or something these days so the prices would be the same.

There's ALWAYS somebody willing to make you a better deal and undercut the other guy.

Definitely shop around...Freeman Mazda in Irving didn't really seem interested in finding me a sedan in the color I wanted, and eventually told me there probably wasn't anything they could do to help me get out of my Altima and into a 3.

Across town in Mesquite, Hancock Mazda came up with a deal and a car. There's the difference between a dealer that doesn't give a damn, and one that wants to make a sale. It's each dealer's goal to be the top seller in their market..if they can steal customers from another dealership, they'll usually do it. Take advantage.

Yeah, we're lucky in that we have an award winning dealer about 10 mins from our place. We went there rather than the other one in town, and they really tried to help us get rid of the Neon and then tried to get the payment as low as they could after they added the owing amount on the current car to the price of the 3. There was never any doubt they could help us out. And when they didn't have a red 3 at a dealer in province we were told there's one on a train on the way here. Hope it gets here soon.
