evidently, the exhaust manifold is about 50 times hotter than the valve cover (flame)...i thought my car was on fire, but it turns out the paint just bubbled and the area around the lowest bolt turned black and started smoking...LMFAO!!! (bang) oh well, i painted it the same way i did my valve cover (uhm), and it looked sweet as hell until i started driving! i guess rust-colored exhaust manifold it is, until i get my AWR headers!

Well duh!

That heat sheild prob gets in the neighborhood of 700-1000+ degrees!
What did you expect to happen?
If you want to color it ,powdercoat it!
Or ceramic or jet hot it.Those both produce nice finishes.

well i had all kinds of extra blue paint, and i paid like 30 ******* dollars for a 12.5 oz can, so i was like what the hell...so youre saying i should just strip off the paint and clean it real well derrick?

sandblast it (to get the rust off) and then either powdercoat it - I'd recommend ceramic coating via jet-hot - or use high temp paint.

Otherwise, sandblast it and then polish it. Some people I know have polished their valve covers using progressively finer sandpaper and doing it by hand. No paint. Just clear coated about 5 coats - I think hi-temp clear coat is available.

I had some left over G2 (hi-temp) caliper paint and I only did the bolts on the heat shield to test how much heat it could take and even that paint turned black. What is the best method?

it was worth a try...you can try buying more high heat paint, but i just dont think it will work...and im not going to bother with powdercoating and all that crap, after all it was just temporary until my next mod - AWR headers...well, next mod after 1st's grounding kit

I know we're talking heat sheild...I'm just offering a similar process which has been used on valve covers. Just compensate for the temperature increase accordingly.

I know we're talking heat sheilds; just offering another process to use to "clean it up". Polished valve covers look good; use a similar process of cleaning it up and compensate with the correct paint/clear coat per temperature requirements.

oh sorry...well, i might try to go out and buy some higher temp paint, like 1500 degrees and see if that works

1800 degree paint is generally used and works well on the shield and manifolds

This stuff is good but used mostly on Domestic muscle cars. Unfortunely it is only offered in simple colors

But search around for other 1800 degree paint.

Go to the autoparts store and pic up some Copper-seal-a-gasket spray. Clean off the old paint and spray this stuff on (it'll be tacky even when dry) Carefully put the heatshield back on and turn the motor on. The heatshield will be copper at 1st but as it heats up itll turn all different kinds of colors (kinda neat) and then it'll end up a steel grey color.

YES it'll work and wont burn up. My brother uses it on his turbo and manifold. The heat actually bakes it on and keeps it there. No more rusty cover.
