Discount tire messed up????

Just checking. I just ordered new tires form discount tire. 215/45/17 Kuhmo Ecsta 711s. (I know, I could have done better, but they were inexpensive) After completing the order, a few minutes later they called back and said the tires that I bought are the wrong size for the car. They said they wouldn't fit. What???
They gave me these sizes from their books for the MP3:

Stock sizes:
205/60/17
215/60/17

Recommended sizes:
215/50/17
225/50/17
235/50 17

Am I missing something, or have they SERIOUSLY screwed up their specs somewhere? Doesn't someone on here work at discount tire? a 235??? That would rub like hell!

Let me know what you think. I ordered my 215/45/17s anyway. I assured them they would fit. They said "We'll see." Yeah, whatever. Thay also asked if I had my rims and tires put on after I got the car. WTF????? :wtf:

you'll be fine...that's the right size (well, 215 works but 205 is stock). they must be smokin somthing...could you imagine a 60 profile on 17's? Holy crap...
I actually have thought about going to 50 profile though, for a more smooth ride, but it would throw off the speedo...(I think)

most tire/rim shops also have the protege/mp3/p5 listed as a 4 lug.

Thanks for the approval. I told the guy they need to update their records and he was telling me I was wrong. I'll smack him around a little bit when I go in.

Since 215/45 is the same as on the Mazdaspeed Protege they will fit fine.

well im the guy that works at discount tire and their computer system is messed up... do not listen to those salesmen...

here are the sizes that WILL fit the mp3 with stock wheels...

205/40/17
205/45/17
205/50/17
215/40/17
215/45/17
225/45/17

I have personally tested all those sizes on MY car and can confirm the fitment of all those sizes.

some discount tires do not know what the hell they are talking about... if you have any questions about tires and quality of tires make sure you ask me before you buy b/c some salesmen do not know a damn thing about high performance tires, or let alone anything. many of them just tell you what you want to hear to get the sale out the door. many are corn fed hicks that can get no other job than to work at discount tire their whole lives. many high school drop outs.. would you want to listen to them for advice on your car... i suggest you ask me any question regarding tires.. i can help you any way i can....

Do you happen to know all the sizes that fit on the P5's stock wheels as well? Thanks!

i have not tested on a p5 but i think the widest you want to go with the stock wheels is probably 215 width

what is the stock size? i forgot..

If I remember correctly.

I dunno if 215/45 will fit .. even 205/45 is a tight fit. Remember, the stock Protege5/ES wheels are only 6" wide.

Just beware of offset when playing with profiles and widths.

Discount and tire rack are both wrong on wheel fitments and even tire sizing apparently. Hence, the proven fitment recipe. lol.

215 or 205 is perfectly fine to fit on a 6 inch wide wheel... take mustangs for instance ... ive put 325 width tires on mustang 7.5 inch wide wheels. it is safe and fits perfect if you put 215 width on 6 inch wide wheels...

if anyone tells you otherwise then they are using a little too much happy tobacco...

You must understand that the recommended tire width for any related wheel width varies based on the tires profile. The only way to know for sure if you're doing something right is to check the spec sheet from the manufacturer. This can be done on tire rack or the manufacturers website.

The tires may go on but that doesn't mean you're doing a recommended fitment.

i totally understand its not a reccomended fitment .. but the reason they have that is for speedometers and fuel economy.

I'm only gonna say one time. Check the manufacturer's recommendation. It is not to retain stock gearing or fuel economy. The guide I'm speaking of or spec sheet doesn't know what car you have. All it knows is that you want this wide of a tire on this wide of a wheel. Check the recommended wheel width for that particular tire.

I'm 99% sure that it's to retain proper integrity of the sidewall. To reduce it's ability to flex. When you go too wide on a stiff profile tire it will have a negative affect.

The majority of 205/45/16 I've seen are recommended to go onto a 6.5" wide wheel. It will mount to a 6" but it's up to you. I don't like the way it looks for one.
