Disbelief in the amount of money I have spent!

I totally agree w/ ND4MSP. This is my hobby. Expensive hobby.... yes, but anyone who wants to modify their car knows going into it that money will be spent. To some $100 is alot, to others $10,000. With labor, I've put about $2,500 plus $4,800 for a new engine and installation but, I love my car and she's worth every penny I've put into her. Just my two cents. Peace.

Well Put!

ya to me i hate spending 30 dollars on registration but if i drop 300 dollars on a new part i dont think twice.... so nd4msp statement is true to me also

ok, when I did the resto-mod on my mustang, discounting the price of the car, I spent almost 35 grand. My MSP gets no love haha. Possibly 5 grand so far, give or take 300.

True enough about the hobby angle.

But this thread is why I'm pretty much stopping. Maybe a few small things. If anything I'd like to make some extra cash on the side and pay off the MSP faster to put me MORE into the black. This way I can get an STI or something and be happy right out of the box.

just read the first page... nothing more. not trying to be a dick or anything but I just don't understand the logic of spending a s*** load of money (say, 10 grand) on a car like the MSP (or P5 or whatever) in order to make it faster. showcar purposes are another story.

when you think about what kind of car you could have got for an extra 10 grand. it wouldnt' even have been an extra 10, per se, considering it would have all been built into the payment. i'm by no way an expert when it comes to modding cars but... I'm willing to think that even 10 grand into an msp wouldnt' get it to the level of an sti/evo. now I know... its' fun to mod and in the end, you have a truly unique car that's all your own. as cool as that might be, all things being equal, I'll take a superior car over having that feeling any day.

that being said... i have an appt to have a custom 3" turbo back along with an smic installed in a couple weeks. that'll put me into the sub 2k range which, according to my logic, will put me into the fringe... afterall, for about 3k more I could have got the WRX at the time. so... I guess I'm being somewhat hippocritical... or something.

Ok, Most of us started out with a car and decided to Do Rims... Then CAI... Then Header... Oh a nice Hood... Coilover... Seats... TURBO... Boom... REbuild...

You see my point. I'm sure that none of us ever meant to spend "X" number of dollars on date of purchase. I'm one for sure. I wanted to turbo the car from Mile One, and did on Mile Fifty One, But it's more complicated and there is always a $500.00 part that will make the car either faster or last longer whille going faster...

^^^ Exactly. Its not like I was expecting on a rebuild three days into owning my car, but It happened. And yea, I could've paid all the labor fees to drop a regular stock P5 block into it and be no better off, but I decided that because I wanted to mod the car a little anyway, I could either pay to have a stock part thrown back on it, or I could pay to have a modified part thrown back on it. It will be cheaper in the long run to have it done this way.

But I did get a little bit, ummm, carried away.

hhmm... with 800 I was running 13.7's. With 1400 I was running 13.4's. With 1900 I ran 13.1's. Lets see how fast I am this year with 4900.....

so you go buy an evo and then what? its an evo like every other stock evo, not that the evo is not a nice car of course :)

the reason the majority of us spend it is because its different than everyone elses, If I bought an evo I would just end up doing the same thing except now its even more money

if I wanted something just so its fast I would not buy an evo either I would buy an old muscle car or and build the s*** out of it for cheap and save myself a ton of money

yeah this is getting expensive by the time I am done the mods it will be close to the amount the car was new

Dude, 18k is like the biggest loan I could get for my car. Anything more expensive was out of the question, I don't know why, but I couldn't get a loan for more...
Modding is fun to do IMO, and it lets you pay as you go if you now what I mean. For example, I could make large payments on an EVO every month, but if I couldn't afford it one month, I'm screwed. By adding mods to a cheaper car, I can afford payments, and get mods if and when I have money for it.
I think i'm around 2.5k right now...

added it up, probably forgetting a few things, but:

Total Parts $17,810
Total Labor 875
GRAND TOTAL $18,685

well mine started at 26K - the MSP that is!!! 10K in negative equity.

then all parts in my sig. include future list which will be in as soon as i get my damn freelance check and tax return I will be at about 6K and all labor is by me.

So i now have a 32K car thats worth 12K but priceless to me. I built this car with my own 2 hands. and as of now i am inches away or maybe even with and STI or Evo. boosting 8-9psi stock with all my mods. when i get the Rods and EBC evos (stock) can kiss my tailpipe!!! and all that ofr 6K more than the car.

If i didn't have the Neg Equ. it would only be a 22K car and thats alot less then an Evo or STI and will be close to 300 wHP. Does that answer your question...CHICO2003

i havent really modded my car,but i know how it is to spend money on things you really dont need, and not buy groceries for you own home,it sux.

I love the MSP, definetly made the right choice by buying one. As far as putting tons of money into it? I wish I could. If I could afford one, I'd have an Evo right now, but I could barely afford an MSP and when I first got it, I told myself I would keep it stock atleast until the warranty ran out. Well that has been mostly true as I've just got a turbo timer, boost gauge, and brakes put into it so far, but if I had the money I'd have a built engine with no cat exhaust for sure. If I waited to buy the Evo, I'd be able to get one in 10 years (which might happen still). I just bought a house and if I had some econobox piece of crap I'd still put a little money into it, but wouldn't have near the satisfaction that this car brings. I get checked out by Evos, idiots ask me if its "a porsche?" (no kidding), I love it. So I probably will put an Evo's worth of $$$ into it, but that will be over years of enjoyment with little improvements along the way. I don't know if I'll ever want to get rid of this car. It will always be an original, the first Mazdaspeed.

I'd say around 10G. What's even sadder about this number is that there is only minor engine work done and that number will probobly double in a couple of years with engine mods. THe reason that it's high is because, I changed suspensions 3 times, exhausts 3 times, intakes twice, rims 3 times. Did an Mp3 conversion which cost me about 2000CAD painted. Did a whole bunch of other stuff.

BLKZoomZoom, But your numbers look like a product of your GOOD driving skill, more than the mods. But I could be misreading your mod list. Also didn't your car go BOOM!! Although there are clearly other reasons to buy the MSP, top 1/4 mi time shouldn't be one of them...Save a lot of dough and get an F-body. Now if the point is Sport sedan, great balance, great looks, than the MSP is a great car, its all about perspective.

personally I find it hard to put all that money onto the MSP, when it all will be lost. And it seems like the best route for the most power powerful is to buy used WRX, corvette, 944 turbo, Miata +turbo/sc...these options may be better if your only concern is financials. But clearly financials are not the only factor.

O.k no real point just my .2cents
