If i knew how to do it, i'd do it myself.

Is there a difference having your oil changed by the people at the Mazda Service Department opposed to just going to a local shop and having them do it?

how about doing it yourself.. and if you dont know how to do it, learn

haha totally missed my question

the exact answer i was trying to avoid

at a dealership, you'll get a Mazda OEM filter, at anyother place, you won't. it's SOOO simple, though!! do it for yourself!

If you have the means then you might want to do it yourself. The oil and filter only costs about $8 so you save a bit of money, but more importantly you'll be able to see the old oil to make sure it's not too dark or even foamy, which is an obvious indication of engine problems. The quickie places usually drain your oil right into a container so they never see your oil. I had a blown head gasket (which makes the oil look like whipped cream because it mixes with the coolant) on a previous car and the quick change place never caught it.

I would just have jiffy lube do it. I mean by the time u go out to buy all the stuff to do it, drive back home with it, change it, clean up, then drive to a LEAGAL place to despose of the old oil, and drive back home, I could have run down to the local jiffy lube (take ur own filter from the dealer, or get a k&n from almost anywhere if u dont want the Fram filter that they will use) and be back home in time for the second 1/4 of the game. YES, it is simple to do urself, but the time and material used to do it urself does not out weigh the advantages of the time saved by a shop. I like to use the k&n or the mazda filter myself. I just see what ever one I can get cheaper, then order a few at a time, then take it with me to the jiffy. They will knock off a few bucks off the bill since u brought ur own. Just my $.02

kewl, i'm planning on getting an injen and i don't want the Mazda Service people to btch

well you do need jack/stand or ramp, torque wrench, and the filter wrench... other then that.. grab a few buddies, and some beer and have a great time :D

just save the time and have jiffy lube do it. if i lived in a house with a garage and had a place to store tools id always do it myself. but living in a apartment complex and having no house to go to, to change my oil, i usually just hit up jiffy lube and i do bring my own filter, i dont like fram. usually k&n. cost about $17 at jiffy lube if i bring my own filter.

The reason I do my own is cause its my car. I drive it. I clean it. I pay for the gas and insurance. So why would I let somebody else mess with the engine when I have no idea if they're even certified or not. I just dont trust the damn places. They dont feel right.

absolutely right.... some of those idiots forget to tighten the oil drain plug and when you're driving down the hwy, thing falls off, engine goes dead and you go back to the shop and complain...

they say "you cant proove it" so you're ******

I'd say change it yourself....I do, and you don't need the torque wrench, really...just a good socket & make sure you put the plug in TIGHT afterwards....Although I think you need proof of it being done to maintain warranty (ie documentation). This is the only reason I'm still takin' mine to oil-change stations (I'm not gonna drive all the way to the dealer just to get charged too much for an oil change)

Speaking of oil..do you think synthetic is the way to go after the engine is broken in? Im thinkin' Mobil 1...

I would definately go 2 the dealer or do it myself....the retards at jiffy lube, grease monkey etc. have been known to let cars go without any oil in them(friend of mine had this happen to him)!!
