Deleting oil cooler

I have a 2007 Mazda5 automatic, and I installed a spin-on oil filter conversion about 15k miles ago. I used a filter housing from a Fusion I think. The oil cooler is leaking and I'm considering two options right now.

I currently have a replacement gasket, but I also have a spin on filter housing from a Mazda3. What are the possible consequences of just not using the oil cooler?

No oil cooler could have very bad consequences, burning the oil, damaging the engine and the engine overheating.

All right I just replaced the oil cooler gasket and the leak seems to be gone. I thought I replaced the gasket when I installed the spin-on oil filter, but I must have forgotten to do that because the gasket I took off was rock hard.
