Decisions suck

sales can definitely be feast or famine -- do make sure you save some $$ for the slow months

My first year, I had several months where I was eating steak dinners -- but also had some when PB&J was all I could afford

Well Saturn doesent pay commission, just base salaries. That is how they take the preasure off the customer. So that can be a good thing/bad thing. Pay is consistant, but you have a good month and you wont see the money from it

If that's the case, it does simplify the OP's dilemma. Find out the salary and if it's >$25k, go for it. To get away from the grease, if nothing else ;)

Well if it is that way then, it is a plus and minus. Plus is your money is guranteed and take the job if it is over 25k a year. Minus in a commision driven sales industry the strong salesmen survive. In a gurantee enviroment your job is insecure even if you good on the premise that they dont like you.
Either way if Mcd's doesnt step you up to literally at least 12$ an hour right now you need to get out of there. You could manage a Wendy's or In and out and make 15$ hour plus.

put in a 2weeks notice at mcdonalds...leave on good terms and try out the car salesman job....give it a few months and you could easily get management position at any other fast food place. you could even try something bigger like wal-mart or a large wholesale store for management. Just if you go for car sales....know EVERYTHING about the cars you sell, the guy i bought the car off of at mazda didnt know anything about the car which was kinda annoying. (i already knew everything) but its better when you know everything about what you try to sell, it doesnt make you seem like a hustlin shmuck tryn to get commission imo.

DO IT! My suggestion is to do it because well...you know about cars. SO many salespeople just recite the brochure. Nothing worse than the buyer knowing more about the car than what the salesman recites from the 7 page color brochure.

The other thing to remember is that chicks buy cars too and LOTS of them know what they're getting into. I bought my 3 because the salesman was just a cool guy who treated me well.

Although you can probably move up in the MickeyD's corporation, think about it this way: you can make money AND use your knowledge to help others make an informed decision. No more management. You get to help people BUY a car. It never hurts to buy a car from someone who knows their s***. I say do it. And good luck.

(iagree) + 1 million on both counts - always give 2 wks notice and my salesman was a douche -- motorweek sold me the MS3, I simply went through him to purchase, and the only reason I went through him is because no other salesman would give me the time of day. I make really good $$ in sales, but I make sure to go car shopping in my torn baggy jeans

To demonstrate his knowledge of the MS3 -- I asked him (after the sale, after the 15 miles test drive with me driving 7.5 and him driving 7.5 miles with me commenting on the turbo) I asked him about proper shut-off procedures for the turbo.... His response? "That thing has a turbo???"

Andd I bought my car in the middle of April 07 ... I think that gives them plenty of time to look under the hood. and this is a so-called mazdaspeed dealership

That job didn't take cause I slept on it too long, but still looking around. If nothing else it is time to get away from the grease. My salesman that sold me my SRT-4 said it was great how it had a "radiator" mounted so far to the front to keep it cool in the hot Texas weather.

you buy your speed3 from Flow?

yup, that I did -- I bought it like 2 weeks before I sold a bed to a sales person from lumberton mazda and found out it was a mazdaspeed dealership -- I would have gone there out of principle, but I really really wanted the MS3 asap

yup, I'm the one and the same... I'm just glad that the magazines and esp motorweek had absolutely wonderful writeups on the MS3, otherwise I might have ended up with a civic si (shudder)

my salesperson was DC ... an ok guy, bad on the knowledge side
