When I purchased my MS3 a bit more than month ago, I also bought the Mazdaspeed cold air intake and cat back exhaust. After 5 weeks (and some trouble getting updates on progress) the new GM of my dealership is claiming the parts are in stock , however Mazda has put a hold on them pending investigation into quality problems.

Has anybody else heard this?

That sounds like BS...

Then tell them to give you your money back and go somewhere else. You can get that stuff cheaper on the net anyways.

I still don't know why we are trusting our dealers with aftermarket parts. Just b/c they say 'mazdaspeed' on them does not mean mazda manufactured them. They are aftermarket!!!

I think some people dont want to chance losing there warranty.Ill take my chances with something other then mazdaspeed CAI just because they charge to much.

Do you know the status of the official Mazdaspeed accessory CAT Back Exhaust? I purchased it in February from my dealer and am being told they cannot get one in. thanks

As far as I know, the MS CAI is out of stock nationwide.

the MS cat back is on hold due to fitment issues.

Noted! Sure you can go with the Injen but it does not have the splash shield and a few other goodies. Hands down the MS CAI is TOP!

Exactly! The mid-pipe is having fitment issues not quality issues.

The CAI has a nationwide back order because like most hot new turbo'd cars that hit the street, there not going to mass produce "in house" performance parts until they know what the consumer likes or dislikes. That being said, they take the feedback from the parts sold out there and produce by that very feedback. In this case the Mazdaspeed3 CAI has certainly established itself and is wanted by many.

The cat-back has not been released because the midpipe has fitment issues, not quality issues. I'm sure the folk at Mazdaspeed would not appreciate your dealer throwing there name around like that. Maybe you should have a chat with Mazda... Rest assure when any part from Mazdaspeed hits the street, I guarantee it goes through more of a long-term quality, fitment and finish than most others.

i have a mazdaspeed cia , cant afford 700$ exhuast so im just delelteing the three resinators on my car 120$. I was tol the resinators and the cats is where all the backpressure is

If you remove the first cat, you will through a CEL. You can get away with removing the second cat, but I would not recommend it. So far by just installing the "race pipe" CAI and Bypass valve the gain is no higher than what you gain with just the CAI. Lastly there are many high flow cats out there and remember a fine is a fine and that money could be spent on a great exhaust. Just my .02 cents.

Fwiw - my WRX had 3 cats, now it has none. Cobb AccessPort allows reflashing of stock ECU - and you can DTC codes(with the StreetTuner software). I've got no check engine light, and when my buddy plugged me into the NJ inspection computer(OBD-II) - I pass.

So long as you go with a quieter exhaust setup and drive smart, you shouldn't have to worry about people noticing you are catless. MPG goes up, as does power, and throttle response - as should be expected when you are essentially removing a restriction from the exhaust.

Oh, and afterfire is kinda cool too.

Micah, your exactly right but here's the problem, we don't have the AccessPort available to us just yet. COBB is still working on it and we don't have a release date. So sure if we had that available to us, absolutely.

Now, he mentioned he doesn't have the money for an exhaust and from what I understand he wants to only replace the two cats and midpipe with a race pipe and no added mufflers etc. That thing will be very loud because our rear muffler is very small. Sure you can buy a quality exhaust and remove things and receive top performance, MPG etc. and not break the sound barrier, but he needs to be willing to purchase that quality exhaust first.

Lastly, I had the side exit exhaust on my SRT-4 and man was the flame awesome. Certain times I would down shift coming to a traffic light at night and many folks would ask me why I was driving a race car on the street. I would just smile and drive away.

http://www.small-engines.com/afterfire.html

Good explanation of afterfire taken from the site above:

"This is not to be confused with backfiring, which is a totally different thing. Afterfiring is that loud bang you hear after cutting off a tractor engine. This condition is more popular in Briggs and Stratton engines than any other engine. The loud bang is totally harmless to the engine, but can be scarry or annoying to the operator. What causes the "afterfiring" is raw fuel touching the hot internal parts of the muffler. How this works is when you cut off the engine after mowing the grass, the engine "coasts" to a stop (keeps spinning until it slows down and stops). When the engine is coasting, the fuel is still being drawn into the cylinder on the intake stroke, compressed on the compression stroke, and exhausted on the exhaust stroke. The key here is the fact that the fuel is not combusted under the compression stroke (as it would be when the engine is on). The fuel takes a ride through the engine and ends up in the muffler. When this raw, unburned fuel hits the muffler, it explodes (like it would during the compression stroke)."

Granted, this is being described on a tractor - but it's the quickest thing I could find. Afterfire is a widely accepted term. It's even used by rallyteams to keep the turbo spooled between shifts. Fuel passes through - and ignites on the exhaust manifold, then get blown out the exhaust. It's kinda the opposite of backfire.

What about using resistors for the O2 sensor, or Sparkplug non-foulers welded in to the test pipe? As far as sound goes, stay out of high rev's if you have cops around. I basically stay out of boost when a cop is behind me.
