Mazda 3 Sport GS 2010
Hello all,

I have a Mazda 3 Sport GS 2010 (33 months old). I've been going to the dealership for all my regular maintenance. I just went for my 48,000 km (30,000 mile) inspection and was told I need to have the following work done:

Not under warranty
1) Replace cabin filter (84.95 + tax)
2) Replace coolant fluid as radiator not strong enough. They will have to drain, remove corrosion, and then replace coolant (149.95+tax)
3) Need to replace the transmission fluid (229.95 +tax)

Total = 462 +tax

Under warranty
1) Leak underneath from power steering line.

Does this make sense with these kms? Thanks.

save yourself 60 bucks and out in cabin filter yourself, super easy. you tube it. everything else plausible...

Look at this link for how to change the cabin air filter. Shop manual recommends changing at 40km or every 2 years.
http://mazda3revolution.com/forums/2010-12-mazda-3-how-guides/2788-how-change-cabin-air-filter.html

If you have FL-22 coolant the recommended change interval is 192km or 10 years. Inscription on Radiator cat or surrounding area.
Other types coolant should be changed at 96km or 4 years.

Mazda shop manual does not schedule transaxle fluid/oil changes. I assume they consider it lasts the life of the car.

My guide is the 2008 Mazda shop manual and owners manual. I have FL22 coolant, Your car probably has it too.

Based on the recommendations in my manual your car should have the cabin air filter changed. The other services
aren't recommended now. Ask why the dealer asks you to do maintenance more frequently than Mazda recommends?
If they say because you are in a cold climate, the coolant change intervals I mention are for unique driving conditions.

Trans fluid is simple to change. Even if you needed to buy the tools to change it (sockets, jacket, drain pan, funnel, and new fluid) you could still come in under $225. It takes 10 mins of work, and the rest of the time you just wait for the trans to drain / refill.

just do it. the transmissions in the 3's are all known to fail because of this so called "lifetime fluid" ive worked on plenty of 3s already to know the transmission fluid turns brown-red/black in under 30k miles sometimes. cx7, cx9, mazda6, mazda3, and mazda5s all suffer from this condition. the dealer knows this which is why even though it is a lifetime fluid, theyll still recommend it as a service to change it. the powertrain waranty is only until 45 or 50k and then youre S.O.L. unless you have an extended warranty. same goes for the coolant. ive seen plenty of them build up rust in the overflow tank even though it is said to last 10 years. do a little research on the forum with other mazda models or even google and youll see it. but as for filters i do agree do it yourself. a hell of a lot cheaper. even if you buy the OEM filters from parts yourself it's a lot cheaper than having the dealer do those.

You should look into doing this work yourself. At 62 I've learned from this site how to take care of my 2011 mazda3 S 2.5 5dr. Have changed the cabin air filter-Beck Arnley 042-2180 , automatic transmission fluid with Redline d4, oil penn syn 0-20w every 5k, and continue to use youtube video and forum how to in maintaining my car. If you have an automatic trans the drain nut requires an 8mm hex socket to loosen and some 4 feet of 3/8 inner diameter clear tubing for purging fluid in 3qt intervals till its red. about 9qts. Lots of helpful people here.
