Damn shift fork!

Yes my tranny is messed up again. It's taken apart and my shift fork broke and so did my Speed slide(not sure what that is). Any way if anyone remembers they said they would not fix my tranny again when they had to replace it the first time. It's gonna cost me $890 bucks to fix it. The good news is i'm having them put an ACT clutch in while there in there.

P.S. Hell no I didnt take it to the mazda dealership

I would talk to a performance tranny shop and see what they can do to make it handle more power (like kooldino said), I wish i would have done this when i had mine opened. I had my syncros replaced at 15,000 but i havent had problems since then, i really try and baby my tranny.

maybe it's time you learned how to shift

Someone should make a shifter like the pro-5.0 that has stops so it won't break the forks slamming the tranny into gear.

well my tranny was so weird and notchy sometimes I had to slam it in so It would actually go. I still think mazda did something wrong with it. I mean they did leave the bushings out of the linkage, and thats just what I found out. who knows what else could have been wrong.

BTW: I'll get the shift fork. It won't be a problem because It's not at the Mazda dealer.

And for everyones information. the first time it was replaced the shift fork was fine. The tranny just locked up and sheared everytooth off of 2nd and 3rd gear. I dont think it was my fault.

we don't need it because shifting fast does NOT EVER mean slamming the shifter into gear as fast as you can!

so there's your problem... you're forcing it in gear when the tranny clearly won't go into gear... something has got to give

why don't you ease it in with some slight force until it actually goes in instead of being impatient and just slamming it in gear?
why don't you try rev matching?

I tell you it is YOUR problem (why else would you have taken it to an independant shop?), I have a short shifter installed with STOCK bushings... I've never had ANY problems shifting at all *knocks on wood*

Time for somebody to start making billet forks. If you're shifting properly, you should be able to shift very quickly without hurting the forks. Also you shouldn't pull on the shift lever until the clutch is fully disengaged.

well I feel that I can now shift just fine now. Yes this was the first car I owned that was a stick shift and at first I probably was not that good on it. But I have learned and have had the car for two years. Now that it is going to be in good condition again, I think I can keep it that way

It's not the amount of power that is killing shift forks...The tranny can handle the power just fine. It's the shifting that kill sthe forks...

Not to jinx you, but I've broken 3 trannies in my Talon, and I have had 2 stick shifts before that one:eek:

you "feel" you can shift fine? listen, practically everyone in this country call themselves "good drivers", so your point? have a real race car driver, or a driving instructor sit next to you and we'll see if you are a "good driver" or not... till then, self claims are baseless... the only thing that can partly backup the claim of "good driver" is a tranny that hasn't blown up yet

the synchros decide when it wants to engage the gear or not... forcing it is not going to make it happen sooner... you'll just end up jamming the mechanism or cause the shift fork to break... and if it does jam, you'll probably end up engaging other gears at the same time and causing the whole tranny to just grenade

that's a talon, NOT a protege

the eclispe/talon DSMs are KNOWN to have s*** AWD trannies that just love to blow up when you abuse it
