Engine light on, scanner said no codes to pull. Car runs and acts fine, checked the gas cap, looked under hood for anything obvious. I did change the plugs and refreshed the coolant with a new gallon a week ago been driving it everyday but light just went on today. 10 yrs old/80k miles. Before I succumb to the stealership any ideas for me check?

Toptack OT-680. Maybe not smart enough for too specific codes? Coolant was Zerex Asian, plugs NGK, all proper stuff.

From your infotainment center, is there any info under "warning"? The car has a message for you and there's gotta be a way to read it without going to the dealership.

If your handheld device isn't showing the codes, you can ask your local auto parts store to scan with their devices. Otherwise, the lowest cost alternative is a Bluetooth dongle and phone app.

I use a VeePeak dongle (about $40) and Car Scanner Pro app to monitor stats and pull codes.

Went to my Orielly store their scanner picked up code P0171 system too lean bank 1. They suggested 9/10 times that's a vacume leak in other words anything... lol. Get back in car to go home light is gone??? Wtf. Cycled engine on off few times and no light. Guess I play the waiting game see what happens.

Did the store clear the code for you?

If you Google the code (with Mazda) with AI, you'll get some clues about what the common causes are and what steps to take. There are a few things you can do to address the concern before it gets serious.

On a side note, does your dashboard display coolant temp?

I don't think he cleared it at least he didn't ask to or say he did and I didn't think to bring it up. I went back in the store just to mention the light went away one guy chuckled and said sometimes happens they come and go. The other fellow who helped me had to have heard that but said nothing.
I did shop the code around so if it pops again I'll start with cleaning the MAFsensor.... no temp Guage just a cold blue icon till it warms up.

If you're diligent about checking fluid levels (both radiator and overflow for coolant) then you're good. I have to have the OBD2 readings all the time. If something is off, I can freak out at my earliest convenience. 😬

Ok so I'm gonna own this derpy move.... found what I think popped that code. About to do some other minor maintenance including cleaning the MAF sensor and noticed the airbox was loose, when I peeked at the air filter last week the back came loose so too much air getting in thus the lean air reading. Duh.
