CX-9 2012 Pioneer Head Unit

Just installed a Pioneer AVH-X8500BHS with backup camera.

Also have done an LED upgrade kit and 35% tint all around.

Put in a new outlet with USB and Aux.


Routed all the hookups into the center console and replaced aux/in with iphone 5 connection for video. (Not a fun thing to do)

Did you have Bose? Also, did you have the small 3" reverse screen already as well?

I did not. Not sure how different the bose thing is. I would talk to Crutchfield about the differences or others who have done the swap.

I will say that replacing the unit vastly improved the quality of audio in the car. Not sure if it was just crap that mazda put in there or how good the Pioneer unit actually is.

Not sure if your 2012 model had factory bluetooth and back-up cam, but if so, did the Pioneer integrate both easily? Does the back-up camera come on automatically when you put the car in reverse?

I am looking into doing this. What kind of backup camera did you use. I am inclining towards ones that replace the License plate light.

I previously bought a Boyo backup camera but it never worked properly, there was something wrong with the connector on the camera and it would randomly disconnect. Now I'm looking to buy this one: Link

It looks almost identical to the Boyo camera I bought but is a lot cheaper. Some of these generic Chinese products get rebranded and sell for 5 times more in the US. Better just buy the generic ones since the quality won't be different.

I am tempted to buy the same unit from Crutchfield and try installing in my 2012 w/Bose and backup cam/Sirius. I didn't pay the extra $2k for the navigation and now regret it simply for the larger screen.

I am looking at the pictures and can't figure how it would stay in place. Sounds like an easy install-but I know things could get tricky when you are trying to get to the parts.

Also looking to buy the PAC interface to be able to use the clock/gas mileage functionality, but have not heard from anybody on the hands on experience. The other option is to get an extra plug/port and use the stock radio once a month to reset things.

You lose the backup camera when you put in an aftermarket radio (at least from everything I have talked to crutchfield about). Considering I only paid like $100 for the pioneer one it is not all that expensive and running the wires is not all that hard. Even easier if you already have one in place that just needs removed. I have yet to run mine as right after the head unit install the temperature dropped and has not cooperated since then. I will update with some information when that is done. Hopefully in the next month or so.

I also highly recommend this head unit. Simply amazing what it does with the sound in the vehicle and was not all that hard to install. Love the two USB's in the rear as I dedicated one to the lightning connection for our iPhones and the other as a general usb connection...now installing the cables in the center console was another matter. Mostly just took a lot of patience and time not to break too many little plastic snaps.

No idea about that camera, but for only $25 it may be worth a shot. Hell I might just get it to see if I can cannibalize it to mount my pioneer backup camera I got.

The PAC interface is really easy to use. I haven't done resets on the total miles and mpg yet, I am sure you can but couldn't figure it out the one time I tried while driving so my attention was elsewhere.
