CX-7 Off-Road Abilities

I had an interesting experience with my CX7 AWD the other night. It had snowed a couple of inches of heavy wet stuff on the previous evening and it had frozen solid, which is somewhat unusual for Vancouver Island.

I was driving down a rural road that was snow covered and icy but the ice was rough and traction was good. I was doing about 50 Kph (30 Mph) when I crested a small hill about 250 Meters back from a T-Intersection with a Stop sign. As I started to descend the gentle hill it became immediately apparent that the surface had changed to the slickest ice caused by traffic braking there all day. There was no way that I was going to stop nor make the corner.

When I started braking the anti-lock brakes immediately came on full bore - something that I had not experienced before. My brake pedal kinda froze and all four brakes were madly cycling causing a significant vibration throughout the chassis. I just stood on the brake and held on and waited to go into the ditch on the other side of the intersection; however, I had the presence of mind to try steering around the corner and the car just did it! I couldn't believe it! I couldn't stop but I made it around the corner OK!

Originally I was going to drive my Grand Prix GTP FWD that has traction control but I'm sure that I would have left the road in one direction or another in that beast.

All of the CX7 computers did a great job in saving my ass. Very impressive.

Thanks for the contribution, TAM. Good to hear that you and your 7 did get off lightly and the the systen did a good job. We will soon have snow here in Switzerland so I'm curious how my CX7 will perform

Greetings

I'm confident that the Swiss Alps will only pose a slight challenge for the CX-7! (dance)

I used to have a 76 Jeep CJ-5 with a 4" lift kit and 32" tires. The place where I camp once a year has a steep hill that gets very muddy. My AWD CX-7 pulls the hill just as well as the jeep. It does slide a little toward the down side of the path but never loses traction as far as pulling me up the hill. Also....We don't have snow much here in TN but while on a trip going through Ohio I got to play in quite a bit of snow. I had to pull into a parking lot to play to make it lose traction. I love it!
