CX-5 "USB Error" Message

2014 CX-5 Touring FWD
Recently joined this forum and it's been very helpful. My thanks to all. My CX-5 Touring FWD w/ moonroof+Bose is about a month old. I've been using the USB connection without any issues (about 4 GB used on a 16GB stick - about 700 songs) until today. I haven't had any issues so far with load times like others (about 10-15 seconds), but got an error message today for the first time. When turning on my car and pressing the USB button it came up with a "USB Error" message. Any one experienced this so far? I did a search on the site, but couldn't find anything specific to CX-5s. Is there a fix for this or is it one of these things that I'll just need to play around with? I pulled out the stick and put it back in several times and have shut off and turned on the engine to see if that works, but haven't been able to fix it. Very frustrating especially since I haven't had any problems until today.

I have the same problem with an HP 16gb usb stick (around 5bg used). Not found any solution as yet but will keep looking!

the stick still works fine on my pc and it did work fine in the car for a few weeks. might try reformatting it and putting the music back on but doesnt really make sense that it would just suddenly decide to stop working

My CX-5 did this for the first time at the weekend. Worked one minute and then 'USB Error'....Crap. USB still works fine in my PC and BMW.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I wanted to post a reference here to a different one that contains a bit more information on the issue. (This was the fist one that came up in the search, and I'm still going through the results...)

In any case, I have the same symptom here -- the USB stick I'd been using for months (only in the car) suddenly stopped working and reporting "USB Error" after a few minutes. It still works fine in other computers, and other USB sticks seem to work in the CX-5. Other users have reported a solution to the problem (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/show...5-USB-errors&p=6238102&viewfull=1#post6238102) but without a lot of specific detail. My dealer is calling the technical contact number at Mazda to see if there's a known solution while I search online...

I posted my solution to this awhile ago.

The dealership located it as a faulty Bluetooth module, replaced it and a couple of other parts and it was fine.

I wish Mazda would fix the USB resume play issue instead of having it reload every time I start the engine. Unfortunately, this appears to be a lost cause.

Bon

I saw your post and took a printout to my dealer, too. They're hesitant to try a repair without official word from Mazda because they apparently only get "one shot" for warranty repairs. Can you tell me your dealer's name? Maybe I can get them talking...

I should point out that the only thing the dealer's service department found on the matter was an M-Tip about USB stick incompatibility. It basically instructed the service center to try a different USB stick with a single song and see if that worked -- and if so, then the customer's USB stick is not compatible. Clearly that's not the case with this problem, though...

Just poking in here to mention that, thanks to gpeng's post, I also managed to get my dealer to diagnose the issue as a busted bluetooth module. Replacement resolved the USB Error message.

I emailed Mazda about the resuming playback issue as well. I figured every complaint logged might be worth something so if you haven't emailed Mazda about this, please do!
Here is the response I received:

Thank you for taking the time to contact Mazda about the USB port media playback
on your 2014 CX-5.

With a media device connected to the USB port, your music playlist will start
from the beginning each time the vehicle is started. This is a normal function
of the vehicle infotainment system in reading your digital playback device.
Mazda is researching this concern and hope to have an improvement in its
operation in the near future.

Mazda values the opinion of our customers and continually researches ways to
enhance vehicle features. We have documented your request for the infotainment
system to memorize playback position.

If you have any additional questions or need further assistance please do not
hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Fernando

Can you tell me the dealer and service adviser names? I can ask my service adviser to call them for details on what the fix entails.

@Steel Thanks, that's a good idea.

Here was my resolving post on the subject:

My dealer is Schwartz Mazda in Shrewsbury, NJ. As you can see from the above post, it was diagnosed as replacing 3 parts. I don't know how the tech figured it out, as on the phone Mazda thought it was something else that would require a lot more pain - changing the cable between the head unit and the USB port. Evidently the tech figured out something different which ended up working.

To be clear, it was not a USB stick compatibility issue - the same sticks would eventually "go bad" are now usable with these parts replaced.

Hope that helps.

I've decided to post more detail here in case others have the same issue. My dealer is still balking at the repair because Mazda apparently doesn't recognize it as a problem.

First of all, the USB stick I'm using is PNY 64GB Classic Attache USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model P-FD64GCLCAP-GES3 that I picked up from NewEgg last August. I loaded it with MP3s (and probably some cover art and play lists, too), and started using it in the car. Other than the few minutes it takes to read and catalog the music on the USB stick, it's been working just fine in the car from last August until earlier this month. It's been plugged into the car exclusively (never used in any other car or device, and no changes were made to the content) since August and until it started reporting "USB Error". After that, I took it out and tried it in the computer and it appeared to work fine.

I called Mazda "Customer Experience Center" (800-222-5500) for advice on what to do next. They had a record of the reported problem and noted that my dealership even called in for help. Apparently the dealership was supposed to tell me to call the "Bluetooth Hotline" to open a case there. This is because a different company (I think it was called "Mazda Handsfree") handles repairs for the bluetooth-related issues. I asked if the dealer had already called the Bluetooth Hotline, and the customer service guy explained that it's something the owner has to do.

I called the Bluetooth Hotline at 800-430-0153 and explained the problem again. They said that USB issues are usually due to incompatibility, but agreed that this was clearly not the case here -- because it worked fine before the car started saying it didn't. He said he opened a case, and that I should bring the car back to the dealer and have them call the Bluetooth Hotline, using my phone number as a reference number. He said that they would help them go through a diagnostic routine that starts with them swapping out the USB port and goes on from there. He assured me that they'd get it fixed as soon as they figured out what was actually causing the problem.

So that's where I am now -- I'll bring the car back next week and see what happens...

Well, we finally got around to bringing it in again, and the dealer is still calling it a problem with the USB stick. They said they contacted the Bluetooth Hotline, but the folks at the Bluetooth Hotline didn't seem to have any record of it when I called them for details. I'm going to take the USB stick down to the dealer and try it out in another new CX-5 and see if I can get any video evidence of it working in a different car of the same model...

Meantime, I've found two other threads -- one from Spain, and the other from Germany -- where they appear to be reporting the same issue. I thought I would include those here as well, just in case it's helpful to anyone.
