I've been seeing a lot of threads about CX-5 fuel economy lately, so I thought you guys would be interested in this.

I was reading the service manual during breakfast this morning before my drive to work and I found a procedure to enable the "SkyActiv ECO MODE"
<a href="http://imgur.com/EOBgvtB"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/EOBgvtBl.jpg" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/></a>

With ECO MODE enabled I was able to get a very impressive 67.0 MPG on my drive to work this morning!
In addition to using ECO MODE I did use a few basic "techniques" to get this mileage. (drove 50MPH behind a semi truck on the freeway, coasted up to all red lights and rolled through stop signs at about 5mph)

Anyway, the procedure to enable this amazing ECO mode is listed here:

You need to disable JavaScript, otherwise the link might not work.

ECO mode works in two ways:
1. It reduces engine idle speed to 500RPM (normally it's 750) saving 33% at idle!
2. It runs current through the alternator effectively turning it into an electric motor. This results in the CX-5 running as a hybrid vehicle! I contacted Mazda USA asking why this feature is not enabled by default and they responded that Toyota has a patent on this hybrid technology (used in the Prius) and to enable this ECO mode by default would requite Mazda to pay Toyota $1500 for each car sold.

For those of you who can't access the link here is the procedure to enable "ECO MODE"
1. Press Start/Stop button twice without pressing the brake pedal.
2. Engage the parking brake (red brake light will come on the dash)
3. Disengage the parking brake (light will go off)
4. Lock the doors
5. Unlock the doors
6. Honk the horn twice
7. Press brake pedal (clutch in manual cars)
8. While holding the brake press the start-stop button.
9. The engine will start and you will see the green "ECO MODE" under the speedometer (as seen in the picture)

You need to follow the procedure each time you start your car because Mazda was not allowed to make ECO MODE stay on by default.

Please post your results with ECO MODE!

I read that the alternative way to activate ECO-MODE is to roll down all of the windows, hold the horn down for 5 seconds, and then yell "ECO-MODE ACTIVATE!"

I think that only works on the Touring and GT models. My SPORT model doesn't have Bluetooth, so no built in microphone.

I'm having trouble enabling ECO MODE. I followed steps 1 through 9 and couldn't get the ECO MODE light to show in the instrument cluster. However the FLUX CAPACITOR light did show up.

I followed the instructions and my car went into ECO MOOD and would not let me go faster than 45 mph!

I followed same instructions and my CX-5 went into EMO-MODE. I also got my dick stuck in the serpentine belt. Please post clearer instructions.

Pffffft, got this working a year ago. BTW, the 2018 cx-5 is great!

I can't get my ECO mode to work. I took it to the dealer this morning and they said they have a fix in the works. Will be bundled with the USB head unit repair.

I got an amazing 99 mpg coming down my hill without ECO mode.

Had you been using premium 91 octane gasoline, you would have hit 104 mpg. And it would have felt more torquey, per butt dyno.
