CX-5 Diesel 2.2L engine oil pressure issue

Hello everyone,

Maybe someone here has experienced something similar. I have a Mazda CX-5 2014 diesel 2.2, which I bought about 10 months ago on finance. My first issue appeared with an error saying “Vehicle System Inspection Required.” I took it to the garage, and they said it was an air-con sensor issue—nothing major.

A little later, I started getting TPMS Inspection Required and SCBS Inspection Required warnings. I went back to the garage, and they couldn’t find much wrong, except that my car only had 1 litre of oil left. They changed the oil filter and topped it up.

When I bought the car in January, the dealer told me it had been serviced and MOT’d before I collected it, both showing all clear. But since my oil was basically empty by June, the garage said it was unlikely the service was actually done.

I didn’t have any issues after that until September, when I got a “Low Oil Pressure” warning followed by “Engine Inspection Required.” The garage said it could potentially be the oil pump, but they decided to clean the system, change the filter and oil, and see how it goes.

They also mentioned that someone had already worked on the area where the oil pump is, since it didn’t have the original seal — meaning someone had been in there before.

Yesterday, while driving, I noticed reduced power, especially on acceleration. Then, the same warnings came back again. I went to the garage, and when they scanned it, it showed the same faults as before, plus about 7 more errors, including things like the start-stop system and others that don’t make much sense.

Now I’m really worried — it looks like I might need to spend £1,000 or more to fix this.

Has anyone had a similar issue with their CX-5 or any advice on what this could be?

My good Sir or Madam.

You should be.

I would do anything I can to get rid of that car.

Look it up. Owners of CX-5's Mazda 6's with the 2.2D are constantly complaining of serious problems such as this all over forums.

I'll say it again. Do what you can to get rid of that car.

Hey,

Sorry to hear that you do indeed experience the same issue that I had with mine.

It`s a 2 fold story, so I would think a code reader would be handy to have. I think this is a p0101 fault code issue, maybe a f258b as well which relates to the turbo.

For the P0101 there are 2 things which normally goes wrong. Firstly, there is a large amount of carbon built up on the intake ports, throttle body and parts around it. There are different companies who can do it, the price is ranging from probably £500-£800 for this depending on the garage. Walnut blasting is the best option, but regular phisycal cleaning and ultrasonic cleaning for the parts are also a way to go.

The second part for this is the carbon built up on the top of the engine where the injectors are, under the valve cover. The little washer tend to get worn out and they start spraying out from there, and that stuff plus the engine oul makes a lovely mess there.

The third bit for the P0101 is the worn exhaust camshaft, and the rockers and small tappets underneath. I was told about this story... there used to be 3 different manufacturer who was supplying these parts to Mazda, 1 of them which was not great, and they supplied loads of weaker camshafts. And what happens why these do get worn is because the rocker underneath the exhaust camshaft is basically a stronger material making the lobs on the camshaft worn out. Once they worned out, they will no longer open the valves that well and the exhaust gases will not be able to escape from the engine, this is when you get the airflow issue p0101 coming... I`ve been there, I`ve done that...

Not a massive deal, everyone cries and says SELL THE CAR ASAP, get rid of, we did keep the car and got the job done with an amazing mechanic down in Lingfield, Surrey. He also has a youtube channel called MrNiceGuy94, check the videos out and he explains everything so easily.

Once these jobs are done, the engine is actually a really good engine, they even think this will be considered an amazing engine from the past when we going to be in 2040 and beyond...

Hope these all made sense, good luck! :)

Oh and I forgot commenting on the oil pressure. I had the same, and it`s all connected.

Basically, when the injector washers worn out and the injectors start leaking, within the engine, then that mess with the oil almost hardens like the carbon peaces. That mass will be eventually washed down just next to the chain, down to the oil sump. At some point then it will be all picked up by the strainer in the sump, and then oil pressure issue occurs.

Very simple process, not sure how come other garages dealing with cars 24/7 have no idea what this is... unreal but they do ask for so much money for no reason at all...

When this happens, then the sump need to come off, clean and clear, teh strainer need to be changed also, not just cleaned!! Then 2 rounds of oil and oil filter and this will not happen again :)

Mine had 141k when bought it.

I've seen others which only had 70-80k and had the same issue.

But once these issues are addressed, it flies for a long time 👌
