2017~2025: CX-5 Bark/Howl/Squeak noise in dash

Best I can guess is it's a vacuum valve for the HVAC system. Quite loud, very quick noise. It's a bark or a howl... seems too loud and "heavy" to be a mechanical squeak if that makes sense. It really sounds like it's inside the dash. No HVAC changes made when it happens... it's just random... Maybe minor temp adjustment as temperatures change? AC is set to manual, not auto. Any thoughts?

Haven’t tested different settings yet. Not a ton of chances to run with the ac in fl. It’s very intermittant too. Only happens like weekly or so.

Stopped into dealer to see if it’s a known issue. One of the techs said his girlfriend’s car had a similar problem that was caused by low coolant. I suppose I could see it affecting the heater core valve. Of course they recommended a flush too.

Well I checked in the parking lot and sure enough, the reservoir was very low, possibly below the intake tube. They gave me a bottle of coolant (quite nice of them) and now we’ll see what happens.

The hoses felt full, so I don’t think it was low in the engine. Wonder where it all went. Presumably, they checked the level at the oil change a couple weeks ago.

What year is your cx5? Which engine? Miles?

Bark/squeak/howl/coolant loss eh. Start checking head gasket and head for crack

Since you're in FL. you probably have a heat pump for your house. Does it sound like the reverser valve on a heatpump. When the valve flips for defrost mode it makes a godawful sound like a moan or bark for just a second. If it sounds similar it might be something in the hvac system of the vehicle.

it went in the atmosphere
the overflow reservoir level drops after and year or two. Its not fully closed one, there is a vent pipe thats open through the cap. Thats normal. Assuming no engine leaks of course.
If its still there after a month or two you are good.

I havent heard of noisea with low coolant ever. Isually its the HVAC that produces such noises. but we cant know because a noise is a noise unless you hear it.

2021 CX-5 with no turbo. It recently had an overflow tank drainage issue. Turned out to be a leaky hose clamp. The coolant system stayed full as it was just sucking in coolant from the tank when it cooled. Pretty normal…System heats up, tank fills, cools down, tank empties. It’s just that it emptied the tank more than it filled it.

I just had an oil analysis done, and it was perfect! So that’s some good piece of mind…Rules out some big stuff.

Edit: Right at 50k miles. Really don’t think it’s the compressor. Sounds like it is literally right behind the ac controls.
