So i took the car to the shop to have it checked out, they told me it was probably a bent cv axle or a bad wheel bearing. The guy said there wasnt any play in the hub at all so im kind ruling out the wheel bearing.

Has anyone else ever had a bent cv axle??

If so..

how were you able to tell?? My cars been making some weird roaring sound..

How much was it to fix, any cheaper way than just goin to the shop and having it done?

Appreciate the help and opinions

Alex

well i had a loud roaring sound from the front awhile back. really loud. ended up beaing a bad wheel bearing. got both replaced and all is new

people always think that play in the bearing will tell you if it's a bad bearing. while that is true, it's not the only symptom. make the wheel spin and you'll know pretty quickly whether it's a bad bearing or not (mine made an awful sound, but had no play)

its more of a 'wa wa wa' sound like a continous thumping sound, it doesn't make the sound as much when I turn slightly right but it gets pretty bad when I turn left. it didn't get bad until last thursday whben I put .ew rims and tires on the car, but I don't think that has anything to do with it.

sounds like a bearing to me. and when I meant make the wheel spin - in case it wasn't clear - I meant spin it "freely" while the car is raised...

Ill check it out, im takin the car to another shop in the morning to get a second opinion about what the problem may be. hopefully its nothing too dramatic.

+1 try puting it up on a jack stand and going from there, it will give you a good idea of whats goin on.

You mentioned the problem started after changing wheels and tires. Do you still have the old tires and wheels? If you do switch back and see if that cures the problem. Your description of the noise sounds like a tire problem to me. Most bearing problems make a continuous noise, it's usually not a thumping sound.

Tires can make unusual noises, especially on front wheel drive cars.

I did notice the noise with the old wheels and tires it just wasn't as noticable, the new wheels are 16s. its at the shop now so hopefully they find the same thing.

Just talked to the owner of the shop, he said the bearing was shot.. glad you guys know what your talkin about. lol. he said the bearing was 80 bucks, anyone know where to get one cheaper?

OK then ya you should be able to get just the bearing for cheaper (a rear one is more expensive as it includes the whole assembly). Not sure who could get it though, but NAPA should have them for cheaper (don't buy the cheapest one though; I'm trying to remember the brand I bought but can't remember. It had 3 letters, that's all I recall).

yeah sounds like it's a bearing...I wasn't gonna read the whole thread.

Like culdir said don't buy the cheapest one...it's not a fun job to do no cheap one if you are paying someone to do it. Pay the extra chese and get it done right the first time.

car fixed, thanks for the help guys. got the oem bearing intalled and aligned for 200. not nearly as bad as i thought it would be.

200$ including an alignment? That's a GREAT deal, even if it didn't include the bearing itself...(did it?)!
