Cutting the Shifter

i have the b&m ss and i shortened it an additional inch. either way i still say it takes less time to shift. here is the scenario:

you have the standard like 12 inch (just say for demonstration purposes) shifter. its at an angle so lets just say that the angle leaves the end of the lever 12 inches up and 6 inches from the center of the shift "box" while in second gear.

now you have a 70ft high shifter and you are sitting on top of a building shifting (bear with me). on the 12 inch shifter its off by 6 inches (from being straight) due to the angle. however, on the 70ft high shifter the angle gets worse and worse and you are now a lot farther away. so you shorten the shifter no matter what its going to shorten your throw *a bit*.

here is another example. take two lines and draw them 1cm apart and a .1 percent angle from each other. now draw them for 10 miles and see how far apart they are. no picture that you can grab the end of each line and "shift" it. and youre telling me there is going to be no difference between "shifting" the line at the start point or ten miles down the road?

maybe ive just been up for 31 hours and im hallucenating.

Nah, you're right. Regardless of whether you move the fulcrum or just chop off some metal on top, you're still going to shorten the travel of the shift knob (not by much, but for the sake of argument...)

Example:
Stock shifter:

o   o
|    \

Chopped Stock shifter:

| \
o  o
|   \

Short throw shifter:

| \
o  o
|   \
|    \

With the chopped shifter, you shortened the length of the lever above the fulcrum, which translates into a shorter shift, even if the length on the other side of the fulcrum is the same. You increase the final angle of the shifter, however, which really doesn't make the shift easier, depending on your shifting style.

Before the flames start, allow me to say that I think chopping off the shifter is a waste of time and energy, as a primo Kartboy shifter, knob, and bushings can be had for under $150 shipped. Matter of fact, that's my next planned mod :D

You guys are crazy, you gotta take out one of the gears to make it a short shifter.(2thumbs)

or you could just pull out the whole shifter and replace it with one of those auto-stick thingamajigs...
