Cutting out the factory speaker grills...

These were posted on a different thread...a bit more work than I am about to do...but if I could vinyl the door and have it still look stock, I'd consider it.

going with something like that u may almost have enough room to seal the door panel up and make it your enclosure. and if the enclosure is to small u could always vent it into the door with some holes on the backside if u werent afraid to lose those door pockets there is plenty of room to go with sealed wich with most speakers will give u the best midbass.

Ya maybe. Its easier to do a job if the finish product is covered in suede. I'll post pics of mine when I get them done. OK, after the turbo gets done, then them!

That Sony was and is highly sought after for it's pure sonic characteristics . Isolated copper chassis , 20bit DAC's . Clean head unit . I had a friend who owned one . Was about $900 new back in 97-98 . Still a lot better unit than most of the new stuff from Alpine , lower-mid end Clarion , mid-level Pioneer . I highly recommend it if you can track one down .

Yeah, that was a decent unit...I picked up a Clarion 9575rz off ebay for $200 last year that would have been comparable to that Sony unit when they were both new. I planned on getting the external DAC for it also but never got around to it. My next system will be with the stock unit so I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the 9575rz...prolly put it in my g/f's car.

yeah that unit is pre explode. back when they made good units. but even back then i didnt care for their longevity.

I found this thread on www.carsound.com and several of the links to tutorials have inspired me to go all out on this (instead of just cutting out the grills).

I am specifically intrigued by the one where the guy uses truck bed liner to finish off his install. It provides a stock looking texture and will last forever (unlike vinyl which will tear). However, this project will have to wait until after I do my hatch. My Image Dynamics ID8v3s came in last week....

I plan to create a false floor that serves as an amp rack and a subwoofer enclosure. The 8"s only need 0.7-1.0 cuft for a ported enclosure so I should be able to keep the height of the floor down to a minimum (4-5 inches hopefully) and the subs will pop out of the far corners (a la fiberglass) while the amps will be recessed. Once that is finished, I will start on the doors.
