Custom short ram

Well being tight financially I decided to take a shot at making a custom SRI. Cut the stock airbox top (per other's how-tos). Went to the local Autozone and picked up these items:

Filter: $18
3" coupler: $8
3"-2.5" reducer: $7
Breather filter: $10

I had a 3" 90 degree aluminum pipe. Just trimmed it down, adjusted to fit, and tightened everything down.

Initial impressions are midrange and upper rpm power is increased. Throttle response is definitely improved compared to stock. No CELs, and I really don't anticipate any due to the stock MAF being used.

Very good mod for $43 total cost!

Here is a pic.

i like it. i am one of the first for DIY solutions but i remember the problem with incorrect pipe size will cause irregular air flow unlike stock characteristics where the MAF will read incorrectly. but as long as there's no CEL than (drive2) and your maf placement might not cause as much incorrect reading.

Very nice, guy. If my nano doesn't get here soon, I may just do somethin like that. :P

OT: Do I spy a 1G DSM BPV there? I've got one from my eclipse. Is the fitment good?

THIS is what I'm talking about! I have been ragging on people for spending $200+ for that Cobb Short Ram Intake, when you can do something like this which would work just as good!

If you know what car has that 90-degree angle pipe, you can buy that intake on ebay and it will have the filter, couplers, clamps, and maf adapter and the breather and would work also.

GREAT JOB on making this, hopefully it will inspire others to do the same!

No incorrect pipe size because the piece where the MAF is plugged in IS the stock piece from the stock airbox.(second)

1G DSM BOV indeed. Good eye!

Thanks for the comments!(nana)

Looks great, but it only costs $43 if you never want to go back to stock b/c then you have to add the cost of the box. For me, I'd have to add that cost back in and maybe the cost of a better filter. And then, I'm back to buying one which also has the added value of being optimized by CP-e/Cobb who do flow testing and the like. But, still, it's a great alternative to forking over the cash.

That's freeking amazing. (bowdown)
How did you manage to cut out the MAF mount? I just checked my removed air box and it looks impossible.

Now all you need is a shroud to force more air to be drawn from below.

Cut twice. First cut was generous, second cut was for fine "tuning" Then grinded/sanded it so the filter would sit flush. Took some time but can be done. Helps I have steady hands.(spin)
