Custom Intake Manifold

i just need to learn how do make it up myself!!! but yeah i'd probably go for dual TB's rather than 4 simply because of it being that bit easier...and they are essentially the same as quads

Good quad butterfly arrangement will look spectacular as well.

Good luck with the projects, fellas!

Kirk racing used to make a sweet quad throttle body setup for the neons, they sold it for $1500 with a tecIII engine management system
they dont make that kit anymore,
Indy racing now makes a really sweet intake manifold for the neons, with a 57mm throttle body and alittle porting the neon gains just as much power as one with 4 throttle bodys
the indy intake on a neon with a CAI, full length race header and performance computer gained 25whp and 17 t/lbs of tq

yeah I know alot of neon crap, and this is a protege site
but more Tb's does not always mean more power, proper manifold design can do the same
twilight since you already have custom cams you will probably see a much nicer gain than others from this type of mod

Hmmm... Just a thought... What would be done with the MAF/IAT sensor, were you to replace the stock TB/manifold with the quad setup? Just curious. I'm guessing you'd have to go with a new engine managment system.

I'm shaking off the ITB set-up for my own car, but still love to help iron out the details. After speaking with Cappa they say that a DTB set up on my civic would only generate about 15% increase in power and would be tricky to make and tune correctly. Appx. 15hp for an estimated $700 worth of work. Just not feasible IMO.

I can definatley tell you that Essential Speed's products are not bad quality first hand. They have some great products, one of our toprotege.com club members has their first kit made, and it is a exceptional kit (BTW it is for sale right now, amazing price for 95hp bump on an auto!). He has also witnessed first hand Essential having to rework a spool kit due to shoddy craftsmanship. I can tell you from the products I have seen from them firsthand, My next purchases will be from Essential Speed.

Quality is invaluable.

Certainly the only Spool kit I am aware of in Australia was absolute crap, the buyer spent an absolute BOMB and a lot of time remaking it. Not a "kit" at all in the sense of simply installing the thing......

Thereby hangs a tale for us in Australia. There are a number of little things different between our cars and the U.S. delivered models.
Compression ratio here is 10:1, we have the FS-ZE inlet cam, our radiators are 3mm thicker.......and we have sh1tty fuel by comparison.

The notion of comparative value of mods is different for us too: The HiBoost kit seems the pick of the bunch but here the Haltech E6K is necessary to run it and that means $A8500 plus install/mapping.

Not quite like comparing NA mods to a $2100 Stage 1 turbo kit.....

hey critter just for giggles can you do a favor for me. Can you call your local mazda dealer and ask them how much a replacement intake cam is for your car? I'm curious to see if I can get one cheaper in australia than japan. It's the same part, just different prices I bet. Also with the strengthening Yen it's going to cost more to import from japan anyway.

I got a reply today!

Good day, thanks for the interest in our P5 products.
So far we are at the development stage for the intake manifold.
Using the flow bench to estimate percentage flow gain.
I'm curious though, i have only designed the sheet metal intake amnifold and
played around with the designs..We have crossed the "bridge" regarding
anything attached to it.
Please enlighten me what is and whats it used for"vtcs and vics"?
when i have a finished proto type i will release a pic.The website is being
used to gauge the need for the "intake manifold". The last time we rushed to
develop the turbo kit and we sat on the jigs for over 6mths.
thanks again for the interest please visit back over the next few weeks.

That was in response to my orginal email that said

Hello,
Id like some more information on your intake manifold for the protege5 2.0L fs-de. Does this intake manifold eliminate the VTCS and the VICS systems that mazda uses in their intake manifolds? Do you have any pictures of the manifold? Also, are their any dyno's to support the 25% whp increase you claim? Please respond soon, and if everything looks good I'm definately going to seriously consider your manifold when I'm looking for one in the spring.

Thanks,
James Overcash

So it looks like they dont have one made yet, but are going though all the proper ways to make an intake manifold. So only time will tell.

Aricjm15 - that's what I'm looking for. i've already good a really good breathing intake setup and the restriction on that side of things is the IM....should yield pretty impressive gains for my setup

flat_black - yep new ecu required

critter - mostly right, but not quite. we have 9.7:1 compression and we have much better fuel than the yanks.

turbo matty - you might be able to pick up a 2nd hand intake cam from someone here when they (and if) change their cams out. i sold my intake cam to a mate of xelderx.

all - that sounds really strange to me...essential speed designing an intake manifold and they dont know what VCTS or VICS is??? :wtf:

i can understand the car newbies and people who dont want to know about the technical side of stuff, but for people designing an new IM for the engine......weird

I am just hoping they can back up a 25% power increase- would make it about the best mod for the $$ and combined with the other N/A stuff I want to do, hmmm....... I want it now!
