CulRidr's MP3 N/A build (~150whp goal)

Sorry about the OT.

Running rich on track is no real biggie... just makes the oil a lot dirtier... is all... :D

I suppose I should update this eh?
Well, somewhat in chronological order:
No I'm still not tuned...<rolling my eyes> I've pretty much given up on the reflash and am looking at other options. Only problem with a standalone is that I can't pass emissions AFAIK...Not sure if the new ECU Haltech is putting out soon will help with that issue.

  • That AutoX was awesome! New alignment did some world of good to get some balance back, especially combined with a softer rear end; the car rotates again, and gripsgripsgrips.
  • Had a few issues along the way; not running for a month while trying to figure out why it wouldn't start. End result, starter wasn't strong enough anymore, supposedly. Either way, I'm running a 626 starter now.
  • Cooling issues were also a real bother as I was overheating and the car was acting up like CRAZY! Replaced the thermostat and all is normal again. I later found out that my coolant temperature sensor wasn't properly hooked up which is what caused the car to act a little cookoo. Thermostat still needed changing though.
  • Replaced my rear pads with HPS to match the front; what a difference balance braking makes to reduce nose dive!!
  • Did a little tune-up; changed the spark plug wires to new 8mm NGK wires, and at the same time re-gapped the spark plugs to see if I could get rid of my random misfire issues. After gapping them to .0425, I haven't any more misfires from what I can tell, although I have a P1170, which I believe is a fouled up main O2 sensor. Going to be taking it out this weekend to try and clean it up to get rid of that CEL.
  • The car now pulls like crazy with the regapping.
  • Going to the dealership to have my PS pump replaced (with another one I got locally; used) as my shaft seems to be rather loose with a lot of play, and I don't have a press to put the Medievel pulley on the replacement. I'll have the camshafts closed up another 2 degrees while I'm there to try and get it even more torquey while bringing the power band down even more. Cars going to be nuts I think, especially since the car runs better then it ever has now :)

Why gap them so big? I have mine at .036" but even 38 thou would be perfect for you.

Found some web information that suggested the larger gap for higher compression engines such as the FS-ZE. I would guess that he has increased the gap slightly to see if it would fix a problem - and it seems it has.

Im encouraged to see that an N/A engine responds better to closing the overlap on the Twiggy cams. I have a set of adjustable cam gears and a cut valve cover sitting ready to go. Just have to organise a cover for the cams and then I can head down this path too.

Keep up the good work! Cheers.

Isn't stock gap .044?? (uhm)

Either way, car didn't like .04, so I tried something closer to stock with some stuff AusOrion passed on in another thread, and no more misfires and fairly smoother operation :)

good to see things are going well for ya now.

I'll double check which ones I have. What is the logic behind using such a small gap? Just curious...(and want to learn)

Conventional wisdom is you should run as wide a gap as you possibly can, whilst still being able to get a healthy spark.

Turbo motors usually run narrower gaps, because the increased fuel loads require a stronger spark and small coil packs are not upto the task of delivering strong sparks over a wide gap.

I run a smaller gap because increased dwell times are available to me if I do with the Haltech.

get coils that deliver a bigger spark - you wont need such aggressive dwells, and you will be able to run higher spark gap to boot ;)

SR20 dummy coil drive + some big fat coilpacks = win (specially for high boost or high rpm or both)

8ms isn't agressive. I've gone up to 10 reliabley but there's not much point going higher than 8 from what I've read.

Nope not yet. Tuner just got some new hardware/software to try and program the ECU.
As for the videos, I'm waiting for my GoPro HD to come in (next week, maybe), and I'll mount it on the rear panel to get you some nice sounds :)
