Cruise control in a mazdaspeed?

From what I understand, the only reason the MSP didn't come with CC is because the module gets in the way of the strut tower brace.

uhhh NO, have you looked under the hood of a P5 lately?

i boost in fifth gear all day long....hmmm :(

the real reason its not in the car is simple - cost. plenty of turbo cars have cruise. look at subaru's entire lineup as an example.

Hey I'm not arguing with ya Ken, I drive in 5th a lot under boost as well. These cars were not built well. Subaru has been doing this longer than Mazda in the "modern days" They don't have a third of the problems that these MSP's have. Hey if we can put c/c on our cars then cool. I know I wish I had it, but we just bought my wife a Mazda3 GT so my car isn't on trip duty anymore (ughdance) . "I will have to get with you about some parts for that by the way!"

Well do what you want, I was putting my 1 cent in, If it works well then awesome we will all profit from the experience.

The cruise control system controls the speed of your car the same way you do -- by adjusting the throttle position. But cruise control actuates the throttle valve by a cable connected to an actuator, instead of by pressing a pedal. The throttle valve controls the power and speed of the engine by limiting how much air the engine takes in (see How Fuel Injection Systems Work for more details).

One of the cables is connected to the gas pedal, the other
to the vacuum actuator.

In the picture above, you can see two cables connected to a pivot that moves the throttle valve. One cable comes from the accelerator pedal, and one from the actuator. When the cruise control is engaged, the actuator moves the cable connected to the pivot, which adjusts the throttle; but it also pulls on the cable that is connected to the gas pedal -- this is why your pedal moves up and down when the cruise control is engaged.

The electronically-controlled vacuum actuator
that controls the throttle

Many cars use actuators powered by engine vacuum to open and close the throttle. These systems use a small, electronically-controlled valve to regulate the vacuum in a diaphragm. This works in a similar way to the brake booster, which provides power to your brake system.

A p5 comes stock with a front strut tower brace? That's news to me.

yup, same as the MSP one. The P5 has the same suspension stuff (obviously different rear springs) as the ES. There's a little kink in the strut tower brace, maybe that was there to avoid hitting the cruise control vaccuum box. I have the corksport brace on now and it doesn't have a bend but has no problem clearing it, so I dunno.

P5 suspension diagram from the service manual. For sedan and p5 models. (sedans did not come with the bar)

Section 2-13-1 note 8: strut bar p5 only

Section 1-20 page 4 you can see the cruise control bracket is different than the sedan.

I had to cut mine but I happened to get a P5 bar cause that is what the junkyard had. I wonder if there is a slight difference between the two cause the only people looking for those things are the sedan owners and why the hell would we notice since we have to cut a bunch of crap anyway. It bends around a huge screw stud too.

I know i didn't look at it more than "yep, gonna have to cut the crap out of that bracket."

If anybody has a msp and really gives a s*** we can compare the pictures.

mmmm yeah about giving a s***....not really. I don't think that's really the biggest issue ever. you could always get a sedan or P5 bar if that was a real issue. no worries. now, the throttle cables and such...it looks like that's totally different, perhaps even a different throttle body? are there mounting points on the MSP manifold for the bracketry and such?

I could take a pic of mine (in the morning) so you can see how the throttle cable stuff is mounted. If they did it for cost savings I wouldn't think they would have gone with a different throttle body though.

my thoughts exactly. leave it to mazda to cheap out on something like cruise control. danget.

I guess since Mazdaspeed is like their race division now.. how often would you need cruise control while on the track?

Anyone who says that it has anything to do with the strut tower brace or turbo need to look at the mp3.. no turbo, yet still no cruise control. I guess since it was a limited run the parts cost for all the suspension and interior parts (oh and that afterthought turbo :) ) .. they had to cut costs somewhere or it would have cost as much as a WRX :)

probably. O, and if mazda finds out the car has been on the track, they will void your warranty instantly. So much for it being intended as a track car. Total BS if you ask me. I had a rather large battle with them over my LSD, but in the end I came out on top:-)

Subaru is the same way, perhaps even worse. They gave people free SCCA memberships for buying WRXs, but if you just activated your membership, poof no more warranty.

FWIW, i've got a cruise control on my car. Its an aftermarket electronic unit made by Rostra, and i got a remote RF controller mounted in the little pocket on the left of the wheel. Looks real clean, and the cruise works reasonably well. And it never boosts in 5th... it'll hit 0, but i've never seen it go past. I paid i think about $350 installed from a local shop. I'll see if i can dig up my pics of it for ya.

EDIT: okay, so the pics are not on either computer anymore, and the thread is gone as well. I can take some new pics eventually, if its important to you, but i gotta get my hands on a digi cam first. Lemme know.

that would be awesome. I assume you did some reasearch and found that you like that particular CC? A few pics would be helpful, but not absolutely necessary. Thanks for the helpful insight! Are you aware of how it works to control your speed? Does it actuate the throttle directly or does it push on the pedal? Thanks.
