I'm working on my final senior history thesis. I'm making a case that the big 3 are crashing and burning, and that a better business model is needed. I have a specific historical model in mind, but the reason I'm posting here is that I'm also going to argue that among the various automakers on the U.S. market, Mazda has had the right idea since 2003-ish:

They're sharing platforms, engines, technology and parts across different models, without pulling a big three and offering the exact same product under 6 different badges.

What I need MazdaForum help with, is to confirm/fill in the following part sharing list:

2.0L 4cyl engine:
Mazda3i sedan

2.3L 4 cyl engine
Mazda3s sedan and hatch:
Mazda6i sedan & hatch
Mazda5

2.3L DISI Turbo 4 cyl
MazdaSpeed3
MazdaSpeed6
CX-7

?L V6
Mazda6s sedan, hatch, wagon

AWD System
MazdaSpeed6
CX-7

"Sports Car Platform"
RX-8
MX-5

"Small Car Platform"
Mazda3, all
Mazda5

"Bigger Car Platform"
Mazda6, all
CX-7
...about 9 Ford products.

B-series and Ford Ranger are the same, I know, but is that motor used in anything else from Mazda?

How 'bout the Tribute 4 and 6 cyl.

How much do the 3's and 6's share otherwise?

Thanks gang!

Thanks for that. I guess this means there's little to no platform sharing between the 3 and 6?

The CX-7 shares suspension components with the Mazda 6 and mazda 3. The transmission is also the same as the v6 mazda 6 and (I believe) the CX-9. The steering wheel is the same as the mx-5. As a side note, the dipstick says "fomoco"...
