03 mazdaspeed protege
i am new to mazdas and i just purchased a 2003 protege 5 for a decent price..i have changed the iacv/map sensor/coils,,the rmp's go up and down and sometimes the car shuts off..the rpms drop down verry low like it wants to shut off at all times but stays on..when i press the gas while takin off,it drives like if i am barely pressin down on the accelerator and then it runs fine from there,,runs perfect on the highway so its basically on take off and when parked/stopped..what can my problem be??

problem #2 . car sometimes wont start on park but it does on neutral all the time..can this be a sensor or something else and where would the sensor be located if its the sensor?

i will remove the egr and clean it today and do a few other things ..can it be the iacv or tps or maf also?

i cleaned the egr valve and definetly was not that..i will replace the spark plug and see if it feels better..i was told that there was a recall on the proteges for bad egr n brake system..have u guys heard anything about that???

Vacuum leak or more likely, an air leak in the air inlet plastic tube after the MAF.
Also, yes, there is an ignition interlock switch telling the ECU you are in 'park'. Swap it.
No brake issues i am aware of. Change the ECU for the new style.

i have cleaned the egr valve, maf sensor, replaced iacv, replaced map sensor, new spark plugs, replaced coils, seafoam'd the motor and clean all the plugs and sensors on the entire engine, replace the throttle bodie gasket, replaced entire throttle bodie,,i have tried alot of things and its still the same..it idles between 5-800(aprox)and needles goes up and down and sometimes wants to shut off and i am getting a CEL for random missfire.

its def. a vacuum leak
that sounds exactly what my car was doing when my EGR valve was loose and it was letting air out

check your intake piping and all the vacuum hoses on top of the manifold for cracks

Or you can just replace all the vac lines. I had a vac leak but couldnt find it so I just replaced all of them...problem solved

update:i ended up driving the p5 for about 2hrs 2wks ago and decided to leave the cel on and run the car..i always received a random missfire code and that was it..so i ended up getting the egr code and decided to get 1 and give it a try and see if it helps..well it did and it helped alot..finally its driveable and doesnt idle crazy like it used 2..i think i still have a vacuum leak but it jumps up and down at 1k-1200 rpms which aint bad or noticeable..i figured i let u guyz know and i feel so much better now owning the p5..i bought it running like crap for 3k and its mint but now its worth so much more.

I had this same issue it turned out to be a bad coil pack. i replaced spark plugs and cleaned EGR....but no joy with those, once i replaced the coil packs...it ran fine

lol thanx bro..i was going crazy for a while and took a break away from it for like 1wk..i got a brand new egr for $26.00 which was great,if it goes bad again then i will just buy the canadian version.

Where did you happen to get your egr at? I think i have the same problem and might need to get one.

i got the egr from a friend who works at auto zone..so far so good and if i have problems in the future,i will just get the canadian version..but not bad for me trading him something that i payed only $26,so i got a $150 egr valve for $26..
