Couple questions about a 1982 RX7

Hey guys, I dont have a RX7 yet, but the opportunity might be here soon that I will get a 1982 RX7 for free from my G/F's Dad's friend. Its been sitting for a little while, but I guess the body is good minus a couple small spots of rust. Now here is what i know it needs:

Rear Main Seal
Clutch Revervoir seal is leaky
A couple rust spots(I have a body guy to do this so no worries there)

Questions I have. What is needed to do a rear main seal on this? The current owner was told the motor would need to be pulled, but Couldnt you just drop the tranny and remove the clutch and flywheel and get it from there?

This motor is still carburated right?

What would be needed to swap to a Fuel injected FC 13b turbo motor?

Would it be worth getting into this project? I am basically in need of a car to just drive since I was in the accident with the slotege. Any advice, comments, input, etc.. would be great.

I will be going to look at it in person soon and take pics and post.

you should be right on the rear main seal. i have taken the trannys out of FC's before and the rear main is accessable from there...HOWEVER i do believe the counter weight and flywheel nut has to come off which is a huge b****.

And yes being an 82 it should be a 12a carb motor. Swapping in a 13b FI motor is basiccally just that, swapping in that motor with the required sensors, ecu, coils, and wiring harness.

Thanks for the input, so for the swap is a different driveshaft and/or rear end needed? I'm just thinking that instead of doing the rear main seal now, just drive it, and then buy a 13b Turbo swap and put that into it if possible down the road

Also, the clutch reservoir seal, is that a pain in the ass? or is it straight forward(I have quite a bit of mechanical experience, as well as my friends who will help with anything needed so i'm not scared and worried about not having the tools), i just want to know kind of what to expect before agreeing to take the car, rather then just ending up with another car in my friends garage that is useless.

the clutch master cylinder is not too hard to replace should be pretty straight foward.

as for the 13b route...it depends. If you plan on going the turbo 13b route you can use the exsisting drivetrain just dont expect the trans to hold up to much. You could put the turbo trans in but it would require a bunch of replacment stuff, such as flywheel, clutch, slave cylinder, conversion driveshaft, ect.

alright, all ideas as of now, even a 13b non turbo would be nice over the carbed 12a. So the 12a tranny bell housing bolts to the 13b motor just fine?

the carbd 12a when tuned right will run circles over a FC 13b non turbo... TRUST ME.. at the track I lose to them all the time :)

to do the rear main u have to remove the flywheel it is a b**** to do (torqued to 300ft lbs) and on FB's it is easier to pull the engine then to pull the trans and do the work.

Haven't messed with an FB for 25+ years, so I bow to ***************'s experience. In any event...in or out of the car... if you have a compressor or can access one, a good impact (> 400 ft/lbs.) makes the FW nut much easier. No bracing and adding 5 foot of cheater bars onto your breaker bar. If the FB rear seal is designed like the FD's, you should also consider changing the rear stationary gear 'O' ring too. Both are easy and inexpensive. If it's a bad leak, figure the cost of at least clutch disc too.

yeah i just dont know much about carbd motors thats all, maybe time to learn though. Also, we will have it up on a lift and have access to a impact gun capable of over 400ft/lbs so it shouldn't be an issue. Ok so its easier out of the car, but is it still doable with it in the car?
