Couple o' questions re turbo

First, for those who have added turbo, particularly to the P5 - how bad is the torque steer? The MazdaSpeed Protege review in C&D mentioned torque steer as a downer

Second - how much horsepower can the stock tranny handle? IOW, if I upgrade to turbo, what else will I need to upgrade?

TIA.

1. you are going to have torque steer with ANY FWD car....take your car out, stop, gass it...you can feel yourself "fighting" the steering wheel to point the car in the actaul direction you want to go. Torque Steer Definition: The annoying tendency of some front-wheel drive vehicles to pull to one side when engine torque is applied.

2. I don't know how "over engineered" our trannies are....as far as how much horsepower they will hold...its really a function of how much you abuse it....drag racing and the like.... as far as other upgrades you will need.....a new clutch for sure....you will need one that will supply more holding power and eliminate slippage.

Something else that MANY people totally forget about or ignore.

IF you are going to make your car GO faster....you better be thinking about making it able to STOP faster as well....the two go hand in hand.....

UPGRADE THE BRAKES!

LMAO you're right sir nuke, it's more important to be able to stop and get out of the car to be able to race it another day, than it is to go really fast and get into an accident and have nothing left...good advice.....of course beware of the warping of the brakes that some people tell me comes with the slotted big brake upgrades.

i believe i read somewhere that the familia S20 (japanise version of the pro) which has the FS-ZE engine (175HP) uses the same tranny...so it should be fine

The familia is AWD, so that means it uses a different tranny. I think they may have offered it as a FWD too, so then again it may use the same tranny.

I'm almost positive there is a FWD version as well, so chances are it uses the same tranny as us..but who knows if cetain small "weak" pieces were upgraded...

it has a 170hp actually and only 132TQ, ive heard that TQ is the real killer of tranny's since torque is how hard it pushes, and horsepower is how fast it can push.

yes the familia is FWD and AWD, you can get

1.5L 4cyl 130HP@6000RPM/135TQ@4000RPM (WTF we have a 2.0L that makes the same power)

and

2.0L 4cyl 170HP@ 7000RPM/132TQ@5000RPM engine

Torque steer is not that bad..............@12psi now thats another story:eek: Wheel hop on the other hand is really aggravated with the turbo. My tranny is holding up fine. I baby it though. No speed shifting or smokey burnouts, when you modify your car to double the HP you should have some mechanical empathy on the car. To be frank I think that the reason we are having so many tranny troubles with the car is because of the age and experience of the drivers. Maybe that have not had manuals before. Now no flames please(flame2) I think I heard NC_MP3 had a manual before but I think maybe his problem was isolated to that puck style clutch. Seriously if you abuse the car or dont have the experience you will have a higher rate of failure on something that was not "over" engineered
