Could I change the head unit?

are you talking how you should cut it? or what needs to be cut?
the point now is becoming how can I change the head unit without affect on that LCD.

As wongpres said, I cant control the AirCon temperature without that lcd.

then continue with your quest but i would recomend not doin it b/c everything is so integrated... let some one else do it first on an sp23... there may already be one... and ask them...

i had mine out the other day to put the loc in... and i highly doubt you are going to be able to remove the hu without the lcd... they are attached and the lcd is fed info through the hu.... good luck man.....

can't remove the head unit and still have a functioning lcd... unless you're a spectacular electronic wizard and rig something up...

I recently bought an SP23 myself and asked my uncle the same question (about installing and after market head unit.) He is a service writter at MAZDA (16 years and counting) and says with much emphasis "DO NOT ATTEMPT IT, IT WILL ONLY CAUSE PROBLEMS DOWN THE LINE!" Apparently these new fangled cars intergrate everything into damn near every other part of the car. Just thought i would offer the advice of someone who sees every problem that rolls through mazda's door. Besides the BOSE system they have in it is actually a nice system. Especially since it is done my the manufact.

auto climate control?

I don't know what all this talk about auto climate control is, and it displaying the temperature on the LCD screen. I have an 04 mazda 3 hatchback and all I have are the knobs. Is auto climate control an option on the 3? I didn't see it as one.

N. American Mazda3's do not have automatic climate control (regardless of trim and model).

The fellow with username 'Mazda3 SP23' is from Australia and has an Aussie-spec Mazda3 SP23, which does have automatic climate control. It just so happens there's a Mazda3 trim called SP23 in both Australia and the USA but the actual features in the SP23 trim are different between the USA and Australia.

Ok, keeping the stock LCD is VERY POSSIBLE. I could easily do it if i wanted to, and might just to show you guys how easy it would be,

BUT, you would still need to keep your stock headunit hooked up. Right now I have mine hooked up and its stored in the glovebox. All you would need (in my case, headunit in glovebox) is cut the wires that leads to the LCD and lengthen them about 2 feet or so. Then take the LCD and use superglue or find another way to keep it held up on the dash strip.

Now in my case, this would be fairly simple since I already house the stock head unit in my glovebox. But really, I have no need for the stock LCD since I dont use CD's, the time is on my computer, I dont have Auto AC. But possible, sure.
