Cost of 30K service

Hey all. The wifes P5 will hit 30K in less than 2 weeks and we were wondering how much the dealer "typically" charges for the 30000 mile service or would we be better off taking it to a ASE certified mechanic?

Last I checked, I believe the dealer charges about 270usd

What do they do?

What do they do at the 30,000 mile service? Anybody know? In gilroy, CA. They are getting 375 for this.

Oil/Filter change
Air filter change
Spark plug change
ATX fluid change (if auto)
Inspect a whole buncha things (coolant, belts/hoses, brakes, etc.)

Do it yourself. $270 sounds a bit low... I bet it's over $300. It'll only be about 2-3 hours of a mechanic's time and the parts/fluids will be less than $40.

I believe when I asked a dealer for how much is was at least over $400. The stuff that has to be done you can look up in the protege manual. Other than the changes that MSUbully mentioned it's just a load of inspections of parts and lubing up hinges here and there.

Cool!

I've got a friend that is a mechanic that will do it for 50.00 plus parts.
I can do everything myself except for changing the fluid in the tranny. But he will do everything.
Thanks for the info, if you need a good mechanic that is Redwood City/Bay Area. Let me know.
Cheers (2thumbs)

Changing the transmission fluid is just like changing the engine oil... pull the plug, drain the old, and refill.

i think i got mine for about 250..
just call all the mazda dealers around your place.
get the one you want to goto to price match the one that offers the lowest price.

Another idea is do the fluid changes yourself, and ask them how much it would be without the fluids. Probably a lot cheaper. I've never had a dealer give me crap about this.

On Manual trannies the fluid change is pretty simple as long as you have a hand pump siphon. I believe it's more involved on automatics because not all the fluid drains when you pull the plug -- I'm not 100% certain about this on our cars though.

I know when I had mine done the dealer price was around 300 (I think, it was a while ago), but i got it done for less, since I had them not rotate tires, change oil, check and flush brakes, since that was stuff I did myself.

only thing you need to do is oil/filter, air filter, auto tranny and coolant flush. u might not need the coolant tho.

Owner's manual says that's due at 45k.

The concept is the same, the execution is different. To fill it back up, you have to have a pump for the fluid cause the hole goes up, and even then its b****.

Depends on if it's an automatic or a manual (which he didn't say). Auto is filled through the dipstick tube, manual is squirted through the oil level plug. Either way, it's too easy to pay someone $89.95 (or whatever it is) just to do it.
