Corksport SRI + K&N Filter - Constant P0171 code

Hey everyone,

I bought the CS SRI from another member on here more than a week ago. It came with a K&N filter that was in need of a cleaning, so after picking it up I cleaned and oiled it. Installed everything and the car ran great, did 40-50 miles of city driving and then hopped on the highway. As soon as I got up to 70mph in 5th gear the car displayed the CEL and was skipping and hesitating whenever I was just lightly pressing the gas pedal to maintain speed. Went to autozone and it was P0171.

I uninstalled the intake, cleaned/dried all the tubing, cleaned the MAF, and reassembled. Same thing happened. I've done this 3-4 times now and the CEL only gets triggered when I'm in 5th gear cruising.

Any thoughts?

This happened to me once with my SRI, but only when I had used a 'custom' jury-rigged air duct. When i removed the duct, the code went away. It's an adaptive mix to lean code iirc?

P0171 is a "too-lean" fault code usually caused by a post-MAS or pre-oxygen sensor leak. I assume you haven't messed with the exhaust side of things so I'd first make sure there aren't any leaks around or after the MAS. Since it's a used product perhaps there's a tear in a coupler somewhere?

I was thinking it could have been the CS duct with a filter thats larger than the one that originally came with the part.. but it was installed on the previous 2 with no issues, and its currently not on my car due to my troubleshooting attempts. I also lubed the MAS o-ring per the CS instructions and it sits in there nice and tight. All the clamps are tightened and very snug. If I stay off the highway, the CEL eventually goes away but comes right back as soon as I've been cruising in 5th for 10-15 minutes, car still pulls nice and strong when at WOT, and idles smooth.

I'm going to check for vacuum leaks around the throttle body area later today.

Check to make sure the valve which sits on the silicone is sealed up ok, We have had one person which had a problem similar to what you are getting which was from that.

Thanks derrick, what can I use to ensure a better seal? Same lube as the MAS?

You can get a small clamp on it which will make sure it is sealed. It shouldn't be needed but it is one way to make it is sealed up.

I'm not sure if this was already mentioned but is the housing clocked to the right position, that threw a code for mine.

Rotate the MAF housing so the sensor top is facing towards the front of the car at an angle, about 10-11 o-clock.

gotcha, that may be it because the maf is current at about 2-3 o-clock. I'll rotate it and reset my ECU and let you guys know how it works out.

We have to re-oil the filter?! It's written not to do that on mine lol?

We offered the intake originally with a K&N filter which would require cleaning and re-oiling. Those filters have the K&N logo on the end cap. We decide to have our own filter made later which is made with the K&N hybrid filter media which does not require oiling after cleaning. Those filters have the logo "Corksport" on the end cap.

I'm surprised this would have an effect unless something is moving in the MAS that would cause a problem. I didn't think anyone used "flapper" style mass airflow sensors anymore though. Any effect gravity has on the air should be very small.

From helping work on the Sonics, we have seen that the clocking of the MAS effect the readings a good bit. Also just changing the filters can have a very large effect. Another thing we have seen is how close the filter is to a wall since it effects how even the air gets sucked into the intake tube. Modern cars are really sensitive to changes like that.

We kept the same size filter when we made the switch over to the hybrid media.

After rotating my MAF, and driving through 2 tanks of gas mostly highway, I can say that my CEL is gone. Thanks ngryffin and Derrick!

CS should probably update the manual to either have a step to clock it, or a note to say what to do if you get the code.
