Cooling fans not running

Hello,

I have been having cooling fan problems with my 2005 Mazda6 3.0L engine. Initially, the original cooling fans were running erratically, especially after the engine was turned off. The symptoms indicated a bad fan control module, which I replaced. The fans then ran properly for a couple of weeks, then stopped running altogether and the engine overheated in heavy traffic. I replaced the fan control module again 2 more times, each of them working fine for only a couple of weeks.

This led me to believe I needed to replace the entire cooling fan assembly.
I purchased from AutoZone the VDO/Continental aftermarket Engine Cooling Fan Assembly part no. FA70273 and had it installed. However, now the cooling fans do not come on until the engine has been running for 6-10 minutes, even if the AC is turned on from the beginning. The AC blows very warm air until the fans eventually turn on. Once the fans finally come on, the AC begins to blow very cold air and everything seems fine.

I ran my OBD scan software and noticed the fans did not come on until the average coolant temperature (according to the software) was well over 200F. I'm beginning to believe the fan control module on the new part is not working properly, prompting the fans to turn on at much too high of a temperature.

Does this sound like it could be the problem?

BTW, I took the vehicle to the Mazda dealership to have them diagnose it, and they could not determine what the problem was. One thing they suggested could be the culprit: the Metra dash kit installed to support an aftermarket stereo. My 6 has the automatic climate controls, and the service rep at the dealership suggested there could possibly be a bad interaction between the dash kit and the AC switches. That seems very unlikely to me to cause the fans not to come on at the proper temperature, but it is true that this problem with the fans surfaced about 1 month after I installed the dash kit.

Thanks in advance for your help. This has become an extremely frustrating problem!
