Coolant *OVERFLOWING*

Coolant overflowing through the closed resivoir and onto the engine bay paint, out of the car is normal? Not in any other car I've driven.

(hmm) That's different. How full is your resovoir?

I purchased the Mazdaspeed 1.3 bar form corksport. They had a Greddy one listed on their site that was $10 cheaper. I tried to order the Greddy and they said they had been backordered for a long time. My stock one was leaking so bought Mazdaspeed. It stopped the leak and the extra pressure is supposed to help with boiling inside the engine. Redline has a tech article about coolant that is really good. http://66.54.67.96/whitePaper/17.pdf It mentions coolant boling over after hard driving and shutting down fast, but this doesn't sound like what happened to you.

If that doesn't help, does anyone know of a mazda radiator cap that would be slightly higher pressure? We used to use 300ZX radiator caps on our SR20DEs or DETs in Sentra SE-Rs and G20s. It helped cope with advanced timing, the lack of EGR and the extra heat of turbos...
Thought this post is old, this would cause the problem to be even worse.

Yeah well I have a scratch on my car, so I thought id post and complain about it, cause I dont have a brain to think for myslef and figure out what to do with it. Also my car is dirty and the interior is really messy any ideas on what I should do with that...Oh and "I mean this in the nicest way"
??? He's posting a problem and trying to figure out a solution, and seeing if anyone else has had the issue. WTF is your problem?

Guys, keep in mind this thread was from August of last year. Someone used the "search" button and brought this thread back to life.

Here's an answer to one of the Q's. The reason a blown HG will cause the coolant to overflow is because the cylinder pressure is introduced into the coolant system(depending on where the HG blew out). The coolant system isn't used to 130+psi, so it blows the coolant out.

Sounds 90% like a blown head gasket......I have been there with one of my past cars.

If you have blown a part of the HG...the presure created in combustion is pressurized throught the adjacent coolent system. Hard to explain....but that is what is happening with your coolent.

...its sorta...leaking inside...versus have the HG blowing outwards......

Doh! I didn't notice that. Guess I'll delete my post.

So, if it was boiling in the coolant reservoir and leaking out while it was closed, that's a sign of a blown gasket? Reason I ask is that this was before I even had the JoeP installed. I noticed recently that I'm consuming a bit of oil, so now that you say that, it concerns me.. I know a blown head gasket will cause coolant to leak but I didn't think it would cause it to come out of the resivoir bottle. Nothing was leaking out of the radiator itself, only the reservoir tank.

It could be a small leak happening across the smallest parts of the HG....that being between the cyclinders. This type of problem is tough because it is not as evident as a "full blown" HG. Under heavy pressure (load) the pressure is forcing AIR into the coolant system...and the only realease for this pressure is through the coolant tank...hence all the coolant in the engine bay area. The radiator is solid...so nothing is going to come out of that area.

Consuming oil is not a good sign....whether the car is NA or FI.

What color is the oil? does it look milky? I don't think the HG is damaged to the extend that you are loosing extreme compression....you would notice that.

Get a compression test done.

Oil was still a purple color at last change, so it's not being contaminated at all. (Royal Purple oil is purple for those who haven't used the stuff) I was just a bit low last change.

Why not do a compression test and maybe even a coolant leak/pressure test? Easiest way to determine leaky headgasket/blowby.
