Why do some consoles have the cupholders only above the gear shift, and others have a cover? Can you get a cover? Or am I missing something?

it varies on the year. the newer ones don't have the covers. i know on the '01 mp3 it has the cover style. check the dealer i'd assume or see if anyone is selling one used.

2002 p5 has a cover. 2003 p5 does not.

yep. they made a couple changes for the 2002.5+ models, like side markers, 3point steering wheel, and the deeper, uncovered cup holders. i think there were some more, but i cant think of them of the top of my head. if you want the cover, im sure the shift plate cover piece could be switched out with an older model that has the cover.

wait, i have a 02 ES with a 3 point steering wheel, what changed about that?

We have the same steering wheel, but the wheels(the ones that the tires are mounted on) are a little different between '02-'03.
FunkyBuddah is correct, the cupholder lid's just a minor change between 02 and 03.

I see, well mine is an 02 P5. Maybe i should ask the dealer if i can get a shift plate with a cover and they can have my old one on a trade + some dough im sure.

if you werent so damn far away i would probably trade with you, but something to consider: i think they changed the design because stuff in the cupholders has a tendency to fall over. I think the newer ones have higher sides or something (never seen one in person). All i know is my bottles of water always fall over and end up under the front seats.
