The v1 is about the best, other than the escort 8500. The advantage in the v1 is the directional detection. It gives you a rough idea where the signal is coming from, so instead of looking around frantically, you already know.
And yes they are worth the 400. They are serial coded to the buyer, so if its lost or stolen and someone else tries to buy something for it, they'll report it to the police for you.

However, the escort seems to be ranked higher in some areas, but id get the v1 just for the directional response.

I've got the Bel RX65 Pro, and absolutely love it. The best feature I have found is its ability to show the frequency of the radar. I know this is kind of a dorky thing to do but I have a list of all the frequencies I've been hit with. That way I can easily tell whether the alert is real or not. The thing rarely has a false alarm and its ability to pickup laser is absurdly good!! I can't believe how well it works! Once I get some extra cash I may get the laser jammer which integrates into the detector. It was found to be one of the only ones to actually work, besides the Escort one.
