Considering 3iGT 6MT Hatch, Have a Couple of Questions/Looking for Opinions

In the coming spring I am planning on upgrading my 2002 P5 to a new car. Currently at the top of my list is the 2015 3iGT 6MT, so I took a test drive of a 2014 i sedan with a friend. Overall it was pretty similar in terms of my driving dynamics to my P5, but there were two things that really bugged me about the car. I'm hoping you guys can convince me that these are not deal breakers for the 3.

The first was when downshifting, the amount of throttle I had to give seemed like a lot, like 25% throttle input. Just seemed there was no throttle response at all at low throttle inputs. I'm thinking that because this was a brand new car, like 26 miles on the clock, the ECU hadn't learned to give more throttle response with only 5% input. Can anyone confirm that this would get better with driving the car?

The second, larger issue I have is with the tachometer. I found it to be small, difficult to read, and low resolution. Looking through the different trims, I see that the 3s trims have a beautiful, giant analog tach, that isnt available on the i trims. Thats a shame to me because the 3i would be a lock to me with that tach, and knowing that it exists almost makes me not want the car at all. I do realize that it may sound picky, but it is one of those details that are important to me. The drop in the MPGs is what causes me to hesitate moving up to the s trims. I average about 80 miles a work day and currently get 30 MPG a tank on my P5. An 8-10 MPG bump from the 3i I see as significant but a 4-5 MPG increase from the 3s Im not sure it is worth it. Assuming a $3.50/gallon gas price and averages of 39 MPG for the 3i and 34 MPG for the 3s would work out to paying $132 more per 10,000 miles, plus a $1000-$2000 price increase for the higher trims.

The other cars I've been considering, but haven't really looked hard at yet are the Focus 5 door, Jetta Sport Wagon, and the Lexus CT. I don't like that the Focus has a lower MPG (same as the 3s) with a 5-speed for the same price, the Jetta wagon is more expensive and just looks boring, and the CT is considerably more expensive for a DD and auto only. Unfortunately in the US market low cost, high MPG hatches with manual transmissions are a rare breed. I'm open to any other suggestions to similar cars.

Doesn't the 3S get 39 MPG on the highway? You will NOT have any throttle response worries with the S version, believe me. It will surprise you with how much quicker it is than your P5. Now, if you had a Mazdaspeed Protg, it'd be a bit closer to the 3S. And you would have a net SAVINGS in fuel cost, compared to your P5. As far as the other cars:

The Focus is not nearly as reliable as the 3.

The Jetta - same as the Focus.

The CT - MUCH slower than the 3S, but definitely a very reliable car.

The VW Golf TDi diesel has average reliably, handles well, and is fairly quiet, but diesel fuel is typically much more expensive than regular.

So to sum it all up, get the 3S!(drive2)

The 3i hatch is rated at 29/40 and the 3s hatch is rated at 26/35. My P5 was rated at 22/28 (old system) and I average 30 and my G35 is rated 17/24 and I average 21 on that. If I'm able to average 34 in a 3s, I'll still be saving $137 per 10,000 miles over my P5. Do you know what you average in your 3s?

Since I get my speed kicks with my G35, how much power my DD makes is not a large deciding factor to me, but let's be honest, who doesn't like to have a little more power on tap every once in a while?

I agree with all of your assessments on the other cars, hence why the 3 is at the top of my list. I appreciate the response since it helps me to work out my logical process out loud. My friend with 2014 6 also thinks I should get the 3s (or even a 6).

When I was commuting 25 miles, each way (when my 3 was brand new), I was averaging 33 MPG. However, on the way to work, my average speed was about 75-85. The highway was clear at 5:30 AM. The trip home was 10 miles of 55 MPH and 10 miles of city stop and go, so it was a fairly good mixture of driving conditions. You should average at least 34, depending upon your average speed while commuting.
I sold my 01 Corvette, just before I bought my 3. The Corvette tempted me into going hyper speeds - just asking for trouble. The 3S is a great compromise of power and economy.
