Confused about the SD card

I'm most likely buying my first Mazda this coming week if the dealer and I can come to terms. I'm looking at a 2025 CX-5 Turbo Premium and before I meet face to face with them I want to see what I'm getting. SThe vehicle I just sold was a 2020 Ford Edge which included navigation but I'm unsure if Mazda includes a free SD card because the $450 they want seems outrageous.

I believe the top model comes with the SD card. On my 2023 Turbo it did not come with one but I bought the $40 one of amazon and it has worked perfectly.

That depends on the country you buy the new car in. Since you give a price in $, I assume it's the USA. Although other countries also have some kind of dollar as currency.
In the Netherlands (where we have the Euro as currency) all CX-5 trims come with a free genuine Mazda Navigation SD card.

Thanks, I saw those on Amazon but did read somewhere that Mazda blocked the use of aftermarket cards.
Most of the cards bought on Amazon or Ebay will not allow updates. If you don't need up-to-date Nav then that should work since alot of people get the Nav for the speed limits that appear in the HUD. If your area is not experiencing a lot of new development then you should be OK.
The secret is to find a recent SD card which should be pretty up-to-date.

If you do need the more up-to-date Nav after a year or two you can always buy another card. I'm still using a card that I bought back in 2018 and I haven't run into a problem where the address wasn't in the Nav. If I had a job that depended on up-to-date address info I would probably go for the $450 card thaat would allow updates for the first three years then a fee afterwards for updates.

only Signature trim comes with sd card. You can ask the dealer to throw a new one as a condition of the sale if you want genuine. They get it around 50-60% off msrp so 200 or so.
Almost all Amazon ones are counterfeit/ clones.

Don't forget that the new Mazda will have CarPlay/Android auto and you will be able to use Waze, Google Maps etc from the phone.

Depending on where you are and where you travel, this may render the issue of the Mazda maps almost irrelevant. And you can download the maps to your phone so not even reliant on cell phone reception.

I had read the same but also read that many people did not have issues so took a gamble and mine updated...
Then you have the "older" infotainment system.
With the latest infotainment system and the associated SD cards, it is not possible to update the Amazon SD cards.

I refused Mazda's offering and ordered one from Amazon which works well.
In retrospect, I would use leverage when buying a new vehicle to INCLUDE the factory card.

I could be wrong but my understanding is the HUD won't display speed limits and stop signs etc without the sd card. for me that is one of the things I really like.

This is what I used to update mine and it might be a few months behind but certainly does everything I need and for $40 I can't complain.

Following an other discussion (Adding GPS SD card to a 2022 CX-5 Turbo) I came to the conclusion that you have the "older" version of the navigation software in your car, in which case the Amazon SD card can be updated in many cases.
I am curious when did the software change? My build date per the door code is 12/22 My neighbors is a year newer. What is the latest software version. mine is 9.35.2.267470. Is it possible to update to a newer software version and if so what advantage would there be?

With newer hardware?

You have navigation software version 9.35.2.267470 which uses SD cards with the latest map update: 2023 Q4 24CW26 (May 2024) released September 2024.

The latest, newest (running in my car) navigation software version is ME373 which uses SD cards with the latest map update: 2024 Q4 24Q2 (December 2024).

Those two navigation systems are from different software suppliers.

newer (latest) versions require coding of the vin and after sale record to counter ebay cards for updates. I think it changed around 2024 or may be 2023.
