COne filter question.

On my buddies 06 mazda 3 we installed a sloppy cone filter just to see if it works and we did. Took the airbox out and put the filter on, once he started it its revs to 1000rpm then drops to like 500-700 rpm round there. Is that good or bad and will this harm his motor. Also after the install we filled up his gas tank and the car stalled.

the fact that it drops to 500-700 is fine because the car idles at 650rpm. What it mean it stalled after the tank of gas? does he have a manual trans and just stalled it or it wouldnt start or what?

Yeah a little more explanation. But overall itsounds normal, unless you have a CEL

I did the same thing to my '04 Mazda 2.3. Dremeled the MAS out of the air box and just clamped a cone filter on it. I haven’t noticed any problems, seems I lost a bit of torque in the low end, but the passing gear, around (70mph through 90mph) there is a noticeable power gain, faster on the freeway. The sound is the biggest difference. It sounds incredible. The best part is, it’s like a twenty three dollar intake.

Thought about doing it, but if I ever needed the stock parts for anything I would hate myself for making that mistake.

:On topic:
How exactly is the cone filter held on?

okay right now im working some glitches out i didnt want to keep the filter on his car but it made it sound insane and he really liked and man did the car get loud even the exhaust got loud on it. But today found out his check engine light went on so were gonna clear that s*** and fix it. I dont have any pics up right now but all i did was use an old left over ram air intake tube i think 3" cut a small piece of it and drilled a hole to put the air censore in and clamped it to the old tube and then the air filter worked great at first when we filled the gas it stalled out but after that it worked but i need to do some modifications.

theres a pick of the adapter thingy i made.

alright I got this whole thing, not too different from the MAF's that are their own piece like the one you have in your hand, that you just clamp the cone onto. What are you dremeling though?

Its a quick and dirty cell phone shot but you can see what I did. There the MAS and the piece right out of the air box it was already mounted in. The filter is clamped right to it to it. I didn't know you could just take the sensor out and stick it in anywhere along the intake. I always wondered how after market CAI setups worked....
