Cold Weather = Bad Gas Mileage?

Tallahassee, FL - I've seen my drop by about 1-2 MPG on the last two tanks.

I filled up the other day for $19.50. Granted, I was abit under 1/4 tank. Hard to believe there was a day, not so long ago, when we were bitching and moaning that the sky was falling when gas was $1.75 a gallon. Now that we've paid $4.00 a gallon, we act like 93 octane is falling from the heavens. :D

I've noted decreased mpg during the winter in just about every car I've owned. Definitely from the winter mix.

Up north they put s*** in the gas for the winter time...killllls my gas mileage. I used to get awesome gas once they switched back to the summer mix, but now they use that 10% ethanol BS.

Here in Florida, our Eco-Governor, Charlie Crist, mandated E10 for the masses. I forget when it goes into effect, but it has been nearly impossible to find ethanol-free fuel for about 6-12 months in the Tampa area. There's a BP Station over in Clearwater (I think) that was advertising "Still Ethanol Free" a while back.

And yeah, Ethanol cuts down on mileage. Not sure if there is still a difference in Summer/Winter blends here in FL now that we run E10 all the time. But the cooler air is denser, which naturally uses more fuel, etc., so that makes sense.

Have we really determined that using a more inefficient fuel is better for the environment? If I'm getting 24mpg instead of 27mpg, I'm obviously burning more fuel in a given time.

It would have been great for the USA if gas would have stayed at the $4 per gallon range. Necessity is the mother of invention... at that price not only do people drive less, but the car makers would develop 100mpg cars in less than 5 years. Cheap gas is now bringing bad SUVs.

I agree, I drove 800 miles this weekend at 50 degrees I averaged 29 mpg, before when I drove it when it was 80+ degrees I averaged 31 mpg
