I had the car drop off at the mazda dealer to have it check out. They said that too much air coming in is causing the problem!.I was not there to ask what code it is throwing. But i do belived the computer needs to be reflash for that mod. It's just to find someone in my are that dose it!.

got the same problem. my protege shudders every so often when it is idleing and i got an cel on aswell.

what brand of intake is it - i am betting it is the mass air flow sensor. if the intake is not well designed the mass air sensor can get thrown off easily

IVE GOT THE SOLUTION!!!
the same thing started happening to my 3 when the weather got cold...I have an AEM cold air intake and the check engine light came on and the engine would stutter and shake. I took it to my dealership and he pluged it into the computer and he said that it was the MAF sensor and that more air was going in and the same amout of fuel=too lean, and the conector that sends the signals to the spark plugs was not making proper contact...he got some special wire, cut and spliced the black wire comming from the sensor, conected the 2 cut pieces with a new short little black wire and SHAZAM! the light went off, the car has had no other problems, and it was under warranty!!!
SWEET!!!

TRINI-MAN, since it did get cold the car would be running a tad leaner. Once the ECU adjusts the fuel trim, it should be back to normal. Worse case scenario, you've losened the MAF wire plug's terminal connections.

when your ground on the MAF wire is severed, your ECU defaults to 24lbs/min (A LOT) of air coming in. Your engine would rev by itself just to keep from stalling while you're at a stop light. If your engine's reving itself, then that's most likely the problem.

You might have an air leak somewhere. Make sure all the couplers are nice and tight and you don't hear any hissing in the engine compartment while you're idling.

if u want pics of what they did, theres nothing to see...he cut back the black plastic around the wireing, did what he had to do then wrapped it all back up with electrical tape, so theres nothing to see, sorry.
PEACE>>>

Well the dealer suposedly fixed it, but here I am a week later with more engine shuddering and CEL!!!
I take it back and now he says the power wire going to the MAF sensor isn't sending enough power due to weak construction!!!...then he jokes with me and says that my car must have been made on a Monday or Friday=bad worksmanship!!!
And the other bad thing is the part, engine wiring harness, that they want to get for me to totaly replace the old shity one, ins't being made at the moment, and it's on layaway!!!...My dealer did a searh of all the Mazda dealers in the entire United States and only one dealer has one, thats right ONE LEFT IN THE ENTIRE US!!!...so my dealer is gonna call them up and try to buy it off of them, he says since it's an emergency they should sell let him have it, but if not he said it could be 2 months before he could get the part!!!(omg)
If I don't get that one last one I'M SCREWED!!!(pissed)
yeah, just thought i'd share my story...cross your fingers for the part!
PEACE>>>

Hey thanks for the info u-all!.I found the rubber coupling loose between both pipes!.That could of been the problem! not shure!.The next problem came from a rainey day, water getting thru the opening top part of the filter! and down into the pipe!.I'am now wondering if i place this CIA in the right location!. I have it going up into the fender wheel well, which is inclosed by the apron. The cia diden't came with any direction!, so i'm think it shoulden't be hard to install!. Well it had me pulling what little hair i had left!.I read and see most of the cia goes behind the bumper bar!, so i'm not sure if this one goes there!?.Well make a long story short!. I took the cia off and put back the OEM stock set up, because i bought this car brand new for my 16yr old daughter since she is a 4.0 gpa student and she likes cars like myself!. I use too take her to the race track when she was a kid. If she had live with me i would of spend time and get it working right, but for her to be coming back an fort was too much!. I drive a moded 03cobra with 500hp at the wheels!.I just wanted to do CIA/EXHAUST on her mazda-3. Well sorry for the long post!, an thanks again guys!.

I have a really bad head ache from reading the worst posts with the worst english ever here, I only hope these are jokers...

This is exactly my problem. My engine revs itself, and then within miles the CEL comes on, usually when it rains or cold weather. When the weather is nice the CEL clears itself. So basically what you're saying is I need to strip the outer cable from MAF connector and inspect the ground to see if its severed?

if your 04-05 mz3 built before July 05 and is getting "CEL" with P0172 or P2178 or P2188 codes, the ground wire at the MAF connector needs to be replaced due to a poor connection... it should be done in accordance to TSB 01-006/06... a special repair kit is available as part of that TSB... it is covered under warranty (obviously) and will take no more than 45 minutes to repair

it shouldn't be all that surprising to all that this s*** is happening to those who have aftermarket intakes because practically all of the new mazdas are using an updated version of the same bad MAF used in the 1.6l protege, and people had TONS of issues with their MAFs on their 1.6l proteges... the issue on the protege intakes is that the MAF isn't getting sealed properly around where it goes in, so people tried using bicycle inner tubes as a seal and had mixed success
