Clutch improvements dialog Updated 1/23
Ok first off this is an exploratory thread for knowledgeable members to discuss and divide up clutch improvements for the ms6. If you've performed any modifications please let us know so that we can build off your info and evaluation of it. So lets keep this A. on target and B. civil please.
Issues:
*Torsion forces on clutch springs: Took a look at this today after reading Antoine's thread. As soon as I find my force scale I'm goign to see how much variation there is across the full "swing" of the clutch pedal. After messing around with it using my hand I can definitely feel an increase in force required just past the halfway part. For fixes I'm going to look a little more into Antoine's idea of a "brace" through the middle to limit the springs to 1 type of uniform force... I'll update this more probably next week with my plan of attack
*Counter weight on transmission connection: I'm not exactly sure why mazda felt the need to do this. I've generally only seen counterweights on setups using heavy return springs. Going to look into it a little more and then if I'm convinced it serves no real purpose I'm going to remove it and see if there is any shifting improvement.
Update: Doesn't seem to really have any impact on shifting...maybe a tad easier on the throw, but nothing major thus far.
*Rubber grommets on transmission end: I will more than likely be replacing these next weekend with bearings. I've done this on every car I've owned and its makes a fairly noticable improvement on response and shifting ease. The only drawback is it tends to transmit a little more vibration to the shifter assembly.
* Horzontal shift extension: The shifter goes up for about 4 inches and then has a 1inch horzontal piece, only to go back vertical again...Appears mazda did this so the shifting wouldnt interfere with the front cup holder...needless to say the additional "horizontal motion" introduced into the shifting surely cant help matters...I plan on finding a spare shifter and then removing the horizontal section and welding the verticals back together...Checked clearances already and shifting should sto clear all the traps both up and down and side to side...only issue is it will make the front cup holder only good for change and phones...
