Hi,

I sent my Mazda into my local garage to get the front wheel discs/pads changed as there was a juddering when breaking (warped).

He’s called me and give me a list of a whole load of other problems…

Back discs/pads need doing…
One of the back callipers has ceased causing the handbrake not to work…

But my main concern is that he said theres a really strong burning smell from the clutch
This clutch was replaced 3 weeks ago, so surely it’s not that?

I’ve only just bought this car (privately). The guy who sold it to me said the clutch is brand new but it hasn’t really been driven since being fitted as he’s been trying to sell it (3 weeks).
I’ve had the car about a week now, did approx. 100 miles in it. I thought the smell was due to breaks being warped & burning..

I called the garage who fitted the clutch to ask if they changed the dual mass fly wheel, but they advised me they didnt, it looked in good working condition.

Im seriously at my whits end with this car. I wish I didn’t buy the thing…
I’ve already spent 550 on it (SCV, front discs/pads, full service).

Anyone got any advice?

um... sell it? with any used car comes potential problems since you dont know how the owner took care of it or drove it. If your at your wits end and dont wanna deal with it anymore just get rid of it. Cut your losses and move on.

If the clutch and flywheel were not installed correctly there can be constant slipping. Does the clutch slip? like rpm go up while the speedo does not follow?

I've considered this, but to be honest, I feel like thats giving up too easy!

Nah I dont have that problem at all. If im perfectly honest with you, the ONLY problem I've got that relates to the clutch/fly wheel is the smell when I've finished driving it (which I presumed to be the front breaks). Althou I've not smelt this at all today, the garage said they smelt it really bad after they broke in my new front breaks.

I noticed a smell when I originally took the car for a test drive (before I bought it), the guy who I was buying it off said he thought this smell was due to the warped front break discs.

I purchased the car.. Drove home (approx 30 miles), pulled onto my drive, got out the car & noticed this smell again. I proceeded to get my jet wash out to give it a good clean. When I sprayed the alloys, steam would come from the breaks.. so I thought to myself its almost certian that its the breaks that are burning (from being warped).

Took the car to the garage this morning to change these warped breaks, he called me after changing them saying "I've taken the car for a drive, about 3 miles, but I can smell a really strong burning, which smells like the clutch" - this conversation went on to him saying that if the clutch was changed 3 weeks ago, they should have changed the fly wheel as well... so I called the garage who changed this clutch & they advised me that the fly wheel was visually ok, so it didnt need changing.

This whole fly wheel issue is complete speculation by my garage... If im perfectly honest with you.. Im not 100% convinced.

As I said above the Back discs/pads need doing & one of the back calipers has ceased.. when Im breaking now, the car seems to be pulling towards the right ever so slightly. Im guessing this is due to that ceased caliper?

Sorry for me rambling, I'm jus trying to get as much information out there as possible, so hopefully someone can give me some decent advise!

Thanks alot

Ok wait.. if it has a real bad Clutch smell its possible the last clutch was basically Fried in the car and the leftover smell is there. This Clutch smell CAN LAST A VERY VERY LONG TIME especially if its in the inside or on your clothes.

Just saying its possible that the smell is leftover from the original clutch and somebody literally burning it up etc.

EG.. My gear oil was leaking out of my prop seal and drive axle seal.. I fixed it.. But the smell lasted for like 2 months even though it was not leaking anymore. Clutches smell real bad when they are fried and as above the smell can linger

yeah i burnt my clutch at the track once and the smell took almost a month to go away

thats cuz you cant drive. haha nah jk, i have burnt my last clutch once. it was pretty bad and it did last quite a while.

at that point that is probably true, i had the car for 6 months and it was my first time ever at the track and my first run. think i forgot to turn dsc off and bog it and just toasted the clutch, most likely glazed. did 3 runs after that and it was ok and is still fine 40k miles later, just took a month for the smell to go away.

Well I've woke up to some definate pleasing answers. Lets just hope you guys are right!

Im making a 200 mile trip on Monday afternoon, so hopefully that should give her a good run. As I've read around as well, the clutch doesnt get 'warn' in until 500-750 miles anyway, so that should take to milage since the clutch has been fitted to about 800 after I get back!
