2002 Yellow P5
Just recently my 2002 P5 has been making a very loud clicking noise when I accelerate. The car has almost 68,000 miles on it. I thought at first it was bad gas, but have since filled the tank up with 93Oct and the sound still exist.

Before I bring the car in, I wanted to post here to see if anyone has any idea's on what it could be. The only things I can think of is the valves need to be adjusted. It actually sounds like the cam rocker arms are hitting. I dunno....what a crummy time for this to happen. I was going to trade her in soon for a new Mazda 3.

could of bent a valve. Thats what mine sounded like when I did it. Take the valve cover off and see if the slots on the gears line up. There little dashes on the gears themself. They should line up facing inwards. It really could be any number of things..

non pushrod motors dont have rocker arms
Well duh...I knew that! ;)

Yeah...I guess I need to bring it in. I was thinking it may be the valve. I don't know how though, cause I never over-rev the engine. Hmmm...this is gonna be exspensive. I just know it :(

Hmm, you need to do some research...There are plenty of OHC motors that still have rockers or "followers" The FS-DE doesn't though.

Anyway, the noise could be valve lash or rod bearings. Does it make the noise when in neutral and you rev it?

Yes...when I have it in neutral I can reproduce the sound. It is not there through the whole rev range though. For example, I will take off from a start and around 3,500RPM it will make the noise, go away when I hit around 4,200 it will start again. Also, I have not noticed any signifigant power loss. I changed the plugs, and air filter about 6,000 miles ago.

Sounds like rod bearings....My motor did the same thing. Does it make a good bit bit of noise at startup?
