I'm moving across the country again, with my dog, my 02 P5 auto with 125K miles on the clock, and a bunch of stuff. If I can pull one of the small Class 1 U-Haul trailers, I can fit the few pieces of furniture that are coming with me. I've read of people towing motorcycles, jetskis, and even 16' boats with their P5s on this forum. I can deal with driving slowly and gently, but I'm concerned in that the 4x8' U-Haul trailer weighs about 800lbs unloaded, and consensus seems to be to keep it under 1000lbs. What's the wisdom of the forum -- will it be fine if I ease my way along, or is towing 800lbs of trailer + 600lbs of stuff a recipe for a blown transmission?

At least change your trans fluid and use a good synthetic before you go.

Get good syn trans fluid put in and install a big transcooler! Not only will it keeps fluid temps down they generally extend the life of your auto trans.

Interesting thread.

I have a small coffee roasting company. I have a booth at some farmers markets, and need to haul that gear around, as well as picking up a couple 130lb bags of green coffee beans at a time, not to mention camping trips, etc.

I'd like to get a VERY small trailer, like 4x6 or something, bare bones and light, that I could hook up on occasion to lug my crap. Should be WELL under 1000lbs at a time. This is a manual tranny.

Thoughts?

rent a uhaul and pull the p5 :)

That's what I'd do, too, if money allowed; but it doesn't. I guess I'll file the towing with the P5 idea under risky at best, and find a way to ship my things.

Thanks for your input, guys -- much obliged.

I'd like to be able to tow a single motorcycle or a small jet ski. They do make trailer hitches, at least class 1.

I wouldn't try to tow much over 1000 lbs, once. Be really cautious of the tongue weight too.

I bought my 4x7 at Tractor Supply for $350 new. It is very light. I pull two bikes and all the gear with zero problems.

I've been trying to sell my integra and I've wanted to get another mazda. I need to tow a trailer and riding lawnmower around. Do you guys think the P5 could handle more with a manual transmission?

short distances towing a light load is no big deal... cross country i dunno if I'd do it, and obviously keep the weight down, and drive like a great-grandmother.

if you think about it, 4 200 lb guys in your car and a hatch full of camping gear (for example) is no more stress on the car than a small 1000lb trailer...
