Checking prices quoted for a new system

I always try to match or exceed the recommended RMS power for the subwoofers. For example if you have two 300w RMS subwoofers I would recommend an 600+ watt amplifier. Will a 500watt amplifer work? Yes...but a 600 or better yet 700 watt amplifier will work better.

Both of the amps specified are alright...for a single subwoofer. I know they are having a deal and everything but you only need one 12" in a car the size of a Protege5, especially since it is a hatch back and you won't loose any sound in the trunk. Plus it doesn't look like you have plans to power your front speakers with an external amp.

For amps and subs, I would recommend MTX over Infinity.
I already have Phoenix gold components powered by a sony 4 channel amp up front.

the rear has the custom fg box with holes for two 12" subs. Ive had two entry level mtx's being driven off the rear channel of the sony 300 watt amp.. so 150 watts were powering two 12" mtx's for about 2 years before one died.. and that was only because I left it out in the sun and it came apart.

I just want something decent to fill in the bass.. not something overpowering.

Oh yeah...s***. I forgot. Hmmm.

The MTX Thunder421 would be better suited for powering a pair of MTX Thunder4500s. That is probably the most economical solution.

A more powerful amp is another solution but the deal on the MTX amp is pretty good and it would be hard to find something better at retail prices.

gonna go with the MTX 5500's if I do get the MTX amp. :) slight upgrade.. hopefully those arent too much louder.

plus the amp has to fit in that custom spot there in the fg box.. speaking of which.. im going outside to measure that space now.. brb

The 5500s have a sensitivity of 89db while the 4500s have a sensitivity of 93db. That means that the 4500s should make more sound with the same power, but can only handle 225w RMS instead of 300w RMS. So unless you have 300w RMS to give them, you are better off with the 4500s.

That ampiflier form MTX is pretty small. It should fit just about anywhere.

I'm running a 421D, it should fit in the space you have. It's a great little amp, and I think you'll be happy with it, especially at that price!

How do you get that trim panel in and out without snaping it in half? What is it made out of?
some kind of really flexible cardboard type uhh.. wood?

It kinda looks like maybe 1/4" or 3/8" birch ply. I know I tried to make one out of 1/4" MDF and it snapped before I could get it in. Most people do it in two pieces.

I can bend it almost in half..

Infinitys are ok. Besides the shape, the solo baric is just ok. I know the MB Quart amps are awesome but I'm not sure about the subs. They're supposedly known for the separates but you probably can't find those anymore, if anything, you'll get real lucky on e-bay or something. My understanding is MB Quart went bankrupt somewhere in Germany or something; however, I think Crutchfield has a good return policy if you have a problem w/ what ever you buy from them.

Show-wise, get a pair of chrome Audiobahn flame subs and mount them with the basket facing out. I think the subs are rated for about 1000 watts each so they'll sound like ass but look pretty cool. I'm sure the looks are the only reason they sell.

If it were almost any other brand I'd say go for it. Sony sucks for car audio.

A system comprised of all Sony equipment is all show and no go. For the same price you can get quality audio components that will sound better.

If I were to choose a brand to go all out with it would be Alpine or Eclipse. If we were just talking speakers and amps I would include JL Audio, DLS Audio, and a/d/s in that lineup since they don't offer head units.
