My check engine light went on and sure enough the gas cap was loose. Will the light turn off itself or do I have to reset it somehow. Im pretty sure I tightened the cap 4 days ago when I fueled up but I make mistakes sometimes so I would like to reset the light if I can. Thanks in advance.

ALL trouble codes remain stored in volatile memory until cleared. Freeze-frame data resides with emission codes as well.

Need to reset it with a scan tool. Had the p0456 code pop up on my car and the dealer told me to reset the ECU with the scan tool.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately the light did turn off but turned on again. I may just buy a scan tool and learn how to use it. I may also just bring it to the dealer if I get a day off as Im still in warranty.

Have the codes checked at Autozone. If it is P0456, that is a evap very small leak. That usually is the code for the gas cap, but it also can occur when the purge valve or other evap valve is not working right.

The gas cap may also be leaking. If it is P0456, replace the cap just to be on the safe side.
