Got a CEL today...Find out in the moring what it is. Car has 4500 miles(pissed)

i myself have gotten CEL's but i have figured out why. it only happens if i drive my car and dont let the engine warm up to 212f or normal operating temperature. if you live in a colder climate you must let the car warm up first, no argument. if you are in a warmer climate it may not matter as much. the problem is the car is ultra sensitive for a reason. that reason is startup wear and tear. the point where an engine looses its life is on startup. reason being is the oil is not at the proper viscosity when the engine needs it to be because it has sat and cooled off and thickened. the worst thing ever for the mazdaspeed 6 is starting it up and puttin her in 1st and boostin away. let your car warm up before you drive and you will be ok. if you would like to test this, you will throw a light every time.

I joined the CEL club last week at 2800 miles. They said some valve was to blame and it was a common problem. I'd have to get the paper work at home to see exactly what it was...

3500 miles and the light was back on again. Same cause. This time the part was replaced. Hopefully, I won't see it again.

I've had a couple of intermittent check engines (I'm at 27k already). The last time I took it in the dealership said a sensor, now I forget which one and the paperwork is in the car, didn't have enough room to travel in cold weather and so they had to drummel the casing for the sensor to make room. I'll reply to the post if I find the paperwork. Anyway Mazda knows about this cold weather problem - ask your dealership to do a tech search on it if you see it again, could be the cause. Seems to have fixed my issues.

My CEL popped on at 800km, stayed on for about 24 hours, then went out and I didn't see it again for about a week. My suspicion is that the gas cap wasn't on tight enough, but not positive that was it.

CEL came on again just shortly after fillling tank a couple days ago, so maybe its as another poster said, its from overfilling tank. This time it hasn't gone away yet (about 100km driven so far, lots of stops and starts).

Solid CELs (emissions based CELs) that are intermittent need a certain number of engine starts and stops without the original problem before the CEL goes out again, so if the overfilled tank was the issue, the CEL should clear shortly.

I have AutoTap OBD2 kit from a couple years ago (used it on my '99 Miata), but not sure if I bought the CAN upgrade. Does the MSM6 use the OBD2 or CAN protocol through its diagnostic port?

For that matter, where the heck IS the diagnostic port in the MSM6 cabin? I haven't crawled right under the dash yet, but its not where it was in the Miata (nice and handy just under the dash by the driver side fuse panel).

The port is just above the brake pedal. Towards the driver right in front of the mounting point of the brake pedal shaft. It faces the floorboard. And yes it uses CAN.

You are still under warranty. Just take it to the dealer and have them deal with it. Get your loaner and roll out. That's what I did.

Yeah, I know its under warranty, but I've seen enough bogus CELs to know there are some that require ATTENTION RIGHT F*****G NOW, and some that you can just reset and/or ignore for a couple days. The dealer will definitely be involved with this, but I like to know for myself what they should be telling me when I ask them what's going on. My dealer is very good (this is my fourth new Mazda from the Sales Manager since 1989), and I know he'll do whatever he can to make this right. Still, I like to see things for myself...

Anyway, I used my trusty AutoTap Diagnostic kit to pull the DTC from the OBD2 computer once jdub260 told me where to find the port (duh - once I stuck my head under the dash, it was pretty hard to miss!):

P2006: Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Closed (Bank 1)

I cleared it and it didn't come back on in 10-15 minutes of idling. Elsewhere I've seen it said that this problem is caused by a small flakey on-off switch that indicates if the low-rpm vanes are open or not for improved cold start. Not sure its true, but it makes some sense.

We'll see if it comes back again. Meanwhile, gotta report this to the dealer.

I had this same code My milage dropped from 20 - 21 mpg down to 16-17 mpg. The car didn't accelerate as good either, but after the temp. got above 20F for a night the CEL went away and has not returned...yet.

That's the same error I got. Cold weather causes it to act up. You will probably keep seeing the CEL go on and off until it warms up or you take it in. They did the modification to mine first, but it didn't work. They ended up having to replace it. Good luck whatever you decide.

Your milage was that good mine has never gone over 17 ever.

But on topic the CEL will change your tuning.

It was 18-19 before the CAI and 20-21 after I installed the CAI.

So having a CAI will give me better gas mileage? Wonder if I can use that to sell to the wife...

If you can keep your foot out of the turbo on a day to day basis. :D

CEL came on for 4 days and just went away and it came....

I'd say the same thing to anyone with a new car or car still under warranty. If you see a CEL, take it in. No matter how annoying or minor it might seem. You paid for it after all. Might as well use it. Even if to find out it's only something minor. Better that then to have it be something major and you not take it in and then have to deal with the "why did you continue to drive the car" issue...

You can always take it to Autozone and they will read the code for free. Because I have a CAI my dealer requires me to pay first then get a refund if the CEL is not related to the intake.(jerkit)
